Watch out world ~ Squishy is eating solid foods now!
Today was a big day at our home. At least for me and Squishy it was. Today Squishy ate his first bite of solid (well pureed) food. We began this adventure with Avocados. To be more accurate a good mix of Avocados and breast milk. After trying with little success to steal the spoon away from my, Squishy did actually open his mouth and ate some food. He munched it, swished it, swallowed it, and gagged on it. Repeat the process 2 more times and a small amount of gagged induced spit-up, adding more milk to thin it out, and a few more bites, and he was done. He wouldn’t open his mouth to eat anymore. Which was fine, because he isn’t using it as a major nutrition source yet, but as a learning tool, to open him up to the myriad of food choices he has access to.
I made the decision to make Squishy ‘s baby food. It honestly didn’t even seem like a choice. After Squishy was born, I quickly realized I wanted a very hand on approach in his parenting. I chose, and am blessed to be able to stay at home with him. I chose and was blessed to be able to breastfeed him. I chose to cloth diaper him. I chose to co-sleep. Now I am choosing to control what enters his little tummy. (Let me add a side-note here. I am not saying my choices are the best choices. They may not work for you, but they are the right ones for me and my baby.) So I will be making it all. Everything except for the oatmeal, which I have purchased, an Organic baby oatmeal with added DHA and Probiotics.
Today, and for the next few days, Squishy will be eating Avocados. We will then try Bananas, followed by Sweet Potatoes, and finally Oatmeal. From there if all goes well, the world of food opens up to my sweet little Squishy baby. Peaches, Pears, Winter Squash, Pumpkin, Bell Peppers, Melon, Carrots, Green Beans, Apples, Apricots, Zucchini, and Rice. Oh the wonders of tasting something for the first time. I can only barely imagine what this must be like for him. I am looking forward to the process of making the food, and controlling what goes into my baby’s body, as well as teaching him to love food in a way so as hopefully not to turn out like me, picky picky, picky!
My hope for Squishy in his adventures in solid foods, are that he will be open to trying everything once, and he will carry that ideal to his adult life. I will teach him that he doesn’t have to eat it, but he has to try it. Whether or not this will work, remains to be seen. I am fully expecting days of food in the face, and sour faces, along with some flat refusals to eat. But I hope he will enjoy his new adventure, and we are able to make it fun for him. I hope he will develop a love for healthy food, and smart choices, so that as he grows he continues to choose the nutrients his body need, and doesn’t fill it with empty calories all the time. I am looking forward to teaching him table manners, so as he will not enter into the world and become a chew with your mouth open, or worse talk with a mouth full of food kind of person. In short, I hope for a lot, but have no expectations; only the tools of food at my fingertips, and my knowledge to show him all the exciting and yummy things there are to fill his belly.
I am also aware that these might just be silly musings of a first-time mom. But with that said, I am excited to move into this chapter of Squishy ‘s life. I am excited to be the one to show him the wonderful world of food. I am thrilled that we made it to 7 months exclusively breastfeeding. I am ready to take on the adventure of making his food, and teaching him to feed himself, and enjoy it while it is all happening.
So how did Squishy do with Solids you wonder – hum I think the score is Avocados 0, Squishy 1! Tomorrow is another day to try! 🙂 It was as you can see – exactly how I said!
