January 26, 2011 By Emily 16 Comments

Family and Life in Las Vegas

Welcome to week 23 of Toddler Talk Thursday! Where Family and Life in Las Vegas, Crazy about my Baybah, and My Life as a Sippy Cup Mom Talk all things Toddler!  This week we are lucky to have Tara from Many Sleepless Nights as a substitute host while Melissa is on her way to Blissdom!!

Toddler Talk Thursday was created as a place for moms and dads of toddlers to come together over a weekly topic and share ideas, go-to toys, or products. It is a great way to meet other bloggers of toddlers. Each week the topic will be different; we invite you to link up, share your weekly Toddler Talk!!

Each week the hosts will travel around to each blog that links up, and pick an idea, story, or picture they think was a great example of that weeks topic. In order to qualify for this you need to blog about this week’s topic, and follow the hosts. Comments letting us know you are participating are always great too. If we choose your blog, we will link back to your post the following week.

Our highlighted blog this week is:
Many Sleepless Nights
Thank You Tara for being available to help us host Toddler Talk this week!

This week’s topic is :

Potty Training
"Potty Training" "potty Training tips" "Toddler" "Potty"
So we haven’t officially started potty training here.  Mostly because I have ABSOLUTELY no idea what I am doing.  (Please feel free to leave comments with any resources that helped you out, or tips you may have)
"Potty Training" "toddler" "Potty Training Tips" "How to Potty Train"
Boon Potty Bench

We have a Potty. (after much research, we chose to go with the boon potty bench) And each night before Squishy takes a bath, I put him on the big potty.  So far it has worked great.  He has gone poopoo and peepee!  I sing and give him a lot of praise when he does this.

**Note we only started trying that because we had 4 poop in the bathtub incidents.**
Squishy knows when he needs a “butt”.  I will say, “Do you need a new butt?” and he will run to his room where the changing table is. He is right about 90% of the time.  Sometimes he is dry, and sometimes when I know he is stinky, he will just keep playing.
Honestly, I have heard cloth diapered children potty train faster, but I really don’t know when to start.  For now I will continue to talk about making poopoo/peepee for the potty, and putting him on the pot at night before his bath.  We have also started to let him into the bathroom (hehe I say that like we had a choice, he is pretty insistent!) when we are going potty so he can understand what the toilet is for.  The problem with this is he has tried to grab the peepee when my hubs goes… So clearly the concept isn’t totally there. (I know some people wouldn’t do this, but I believe in teaching through example, he needs to understand everyone pees/poops and see how it is done)
When he gets closer to two, and can pull his pants on and off himself, I will get pretty proactive about potty training, but until then it is more information then training.

Link Up Suggestions:

1. We ask that you follow all three hosts. That way you can keep up to date on future Toddler Talks.

2. Please grab the Toddler Talk Button and display it in your post or on your blog.
3. Stop in to other blogs that are linking up. Leave a meaningful comment if you visit, and follow if you would like.

This link up is for families that have toddlers. Raising a toddler can be fun, crazy, exciting, and exhausting. Sharing what works for you could give other families another way to do things.

Have Fun!

Next weeks topic will be:

Please – Before you Link up – This is NOT A BLOG HOP!! IT IS A MEME FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS OF TODDLERS. If you aren’t going to post specific to this weeks topic, then don’t link up.

We like it a lot so far – I was with them at the show when they made the call to go with that one. 🙂 I like that it has a splash guard for boys!

This is too funny, I think they learn by seeing and doing as well, so of course it makes sense to see Daddy use the potty lol 🙂

    Best of luck!

It is so reassuring to hear that it is normal to have them learn by doing! Here I am thinking we are crazy for going that route!

Teaching through example is great and honestly, I don’t know any families with toddlers who have any bathroom privacy. Even if the intentions to keep the bathroom private were there in the beginning.

I am right in the midst of potty training myself. My 3yo is working on it, and I’m sure as soon as I am done with him, my 2yo will start up. It’s a LOT of work and requires a TON of patience! My boys are incredibly difficult to train, but I’ve sucessfully trained 3 kids so I know I can do it, LOL.

Thanks for visiting my blog. You are set up as ‘no-reply blogger’ and had your profile hidden so it took me awhile to find your site but eventually I did!

For boys, I really think showing them is the way to go. But I have a girl. And even though she now insists on going to the bathroom with me (and I’m told this is a good thing?), there isn’t anything to see. I have NO idea how this is going to happen…
