Applecheeks Cloth Diapers Review

November 27, 2013 By Emily 46 Comments

I’m really excited to share this cloth diaper review with you because it is hands down my personal favorite cloth diaper.  When I started cloth diapering Baby D this year I mainly used prefolds because that is what I was used to.  While I still love my prefolds (and occasionally even use them as doublers in my Applecheeks) I would say I am officially addicted to Applecheeks Cloth Diapers and this is why!

 My Full Video Review:

How to Use Applecheeks Cloth Diapers:

Applecheeks covers come in two sizes.  Size 1 (7-20lbs) and Size 2 (18-35+lbs).  The two sizes make it so that your baby can have the absolute best fitting diaper.   Unlike many One-Sized diapers, the Applecheeks two size system will truly take you from birth to potty training.  While it might seem like this can be more pricy than simply using a one sized diaper the truth is with many one-size diapers you still need a newborn stash and often you need a toddler sized diaper as well.  Plus Applecheeks really hold close to their retail value if you keep them in good condition.  So you can easily expect to cloth babies in one stash of diapers and still possibly sell them afterwards.

The Applecheeks cover is an envelope style cover featuring a very large opening in the middle of the diaper.  The covers can be used as a All-In-Two diaper by laying your inserts on top of the micro-fleece lining OR as a Pocket Diaper by stuffing your inserts inside the diaper.  What’s really cool about the covers if you choose to stuff your diapers (I stuff), you don’t have to worry about touching the dirty inserts.  The large center opening allows your washing machine to self agitate the inserts out!  With my Applecheeks I never have to touch poopy inserts!  That alone was a huge selling point for my husband!

You have a few different options for inserts with the Applecheeks Cloth Diapering system.

  • Bamboo Inserts:
My personal favorite insert option is the bamboo inserts.  They come in either 2ply or 3ply and are made of 70% bamboo and 30% organic cotton fleece.  This not only makes the inserts super absorbent, but because they are bamboo they are also naturally anti-microbial.  I used to have issues with my son’s bottom being really red and sensitive.  As soon as we switched to the bamboo inserts the redness stopped.  I also noticed we don’t ever get compression leaks with our bamboo.  I think this is a combination of the material of the inserts as well as the leg ruffles.
  • Stay Dry MicroTerry Inserts:
The stay dry microterry inserts are another great option.  They are a 2 sided liner.  One one side is a microfleece lining, and the other side (with the red outline) is a microterry lining.  The microterry will pull all moisture away from baby, which is why you can’t put it up against baby’s bottom or you will give baby a rash.  However used inside of the pocket it’s a great option for when you need baby to stay dry longer.  The microfleece is also absorbent and can be put against baby’s skin.

"Applecheeks Cloth Diaper" "Applecheeks" "Applecheeks Diapers" "Applecheeks Review" "How to Use Applecheeks Cloth Diapers"

The diaper itself is very trim in my opinion.  It also has a higher rise than many of his other diapers. I like this because my son is a heavy wetter and would often leak out the top of the diapers when he slept on his belly.  The ONLY leak we have ever had in our Applecheeks diaper was a result of me forgetting to put an insert in… (Can you say tired mommy?)  There are two rows of snaps on the covers.  They don’t have to be lined up either.  You are supposed to pull the elastic tight around baby’s leg and fasten the bottom hip snap first, then snap your top snaps where they fall.

There is a lot of elastic in the legs and on the back/front of the diaper.  This allows you to get a really good fit on baby as they grow.  The diaper has unique leg ruffles.  These not only look cute, but they are functional as well.  With other diapers we would get big red marks around his thighs, and if he had a big pee, we would get compression leaks at the legs.  I think the leg ruffles add an extra level of protection against these compression leeks.

Another thing we don’t have issues with since we started using Applecheeks is wing droopage.  The 2 snaps are wide enough apart it really helps to keep drooping at bay!  Plus the snap system is simple enough it makes this diaper a great option for those who cloth at daycare, or for when a babysitter comes over.

"Applecheeks Cloth Diaper" "Applecheeks" "Applecheeks Diapers" "Applecheeks Review" "How to Use Applecheeks Cloth Diapers"

I do have one warning about Applecheeks cloth diapers.  They are highly addictive!!  You may find you won’t be able to travel without them. (I NEVER considered traveling with cloth until I started using Applecheeks).  You might find yourself planning whole outfits around them.  You will certainly find yourself having conversations about cloth while in the changing room with other moms.  You might even start purchasing Applecheeks logo items for yourself.  I love my Applecheeks Tervis tumbler!  Once you try Applecheeks you will want a full rainbow of them and you might find yourself neglecting your other diapers!

"Applecheeks Crazy" "Applecheeks Obesseion" "Applecheeks Cloth Diapers"

The hype surrounding Applecheeks cloth diapers is very real!  They are worth their weight in gold in my opinion.  They are our daytime, out of the house, AND our nighttime cloth diaper.  I er I mean We love our Applecheeks Cloth Diapers!

These sound like great diapers. I like the leg ruffles. They seem like they would really help keep the mess in where it belongs.

We’ve been using Applecheeks since late October 2010 and were exclusively using Applecheeks by Spring 2011! They are the best diapers out there for sure!

I hope to find out what all the hype is about with these diapers once baby arrives! I like that the insert agitates out in the wash and if course the diapers come in such cute colors!

I have used two-size diapers with my LO and they worked really well. I haven’t tried AppleCheeks yet, though.

I like the idea of not touching a poopy insert (self-agitating)…definitely a big plus!

Very interesting and thorough review! I wonder if the inserts would agitate out in my HE toploader. I had no idea the ruffles served a purpose!

I have an Applecheeks swim diaper and it’s great, I would love to try their actual diapers. I love duo sizing so much more than “one size”. We couldn’t get one size diapers to fit really well until close to 15 lbs (on our skinny waisted girl). I love the ruffly edges of these, too.
