If you missed the announcement last week, I’m alternating every other week with my Fitness Fridays and Friday Favorites. In my last fitness friday post I talked about my goals and supplements. It’s been two weeks since I set those goals so where am I now?
Goals:
Well, I just finished 30 days of the Whole30. While I did have one major slip up, overall I’m pretty happy with my efforts. I lost 6 lbs and feel like my “bloat” went way down. I’m planning on doing another Whole30 soon, but am thinking about doing a 21 Day Sugar Detox first…
Curious what I ate during the Whole30? Check out these posts:
In my last Fitness Friday post I mentioned my desire to be more consistent with my workouts… I have gotten a few in, but I’m still struggling to get into a regular schedule. I have a million excuses (sick or teething kiddos, getting ready for a deployment, migraines…) but I really just need to do it. So, I’m putting it into the internet universe and hopefully that will give me a swift kick in my butt.
I am planning on running the Las Vegas 5k on May 10th. It’s a pretty flat course, and it runs by the Las Vegas sign (which in 7 years living here I still haven’t had my picture with!!) I’ve got 3 months to really give it my best. I’ve done fun runs in the past, but I really want to focus on running the whole thing in 30 minutes. If you know me and my love hate relationship with running that is a serious goal.
What Are Your Goals This Week?
On the Biggest Loser Season Finale:
Did Rachel lose too much weight. We’ve all seen the image floating around twitter of a shocked Bob and Jillian – not to mention her fellow contestant Jennifer.
My opinion? Absolutely yes. Does she have an eating disorder? Only time will tell that one. She’s admitted to eating 1200-1600 calories and working out up to 5 hours a day, but the reality is the Biggest Loser is a competition with a $250,000 prize to win. Each year since the Biggest Loser first aired the winners are losing more and more weight in a super short period of time. I remember watching and being shocked by how thin Ali Vincent got, but she found her healthy weight after the show and continues to look great. I imagine Rachel will do the same thing, at least I hope she will.

The fact is that at 5’5 and 105 she is clinically underweight, and truthfully it didn’t look that great on her. I watched all season long, and really identified with her. As a former division I college athlete I really saw a lot of myself in her story.
(This was me at State Finals in High School before I dove in college until injury ended my 16 years of diving)
I eat emotionally and as a result I put on a lot of weight. I know I can get back to a very healthy weight, but it will take a lot of work. I enjoyed seeing her competitive side return on the show as she won challenge after challenge and even thought to myself how cool it would be to do a sprint triathlon one day going as far as to see if Las Vegas offered some events like that. (They do – maybe next year!) On the episode prior to the Finale I was so excited for Rachel and hoped would win.
However, even with the $250,000 prize I never thought she’d go so far as to lose an additional 45lbs in 3 months. Can I say if the money was offered to me I wouldn’t do the same? No, I honestly can’t say that. I do however feel very conflicted knowing SO MANY watch this show as inspiration, including children. Is this the image we want them to see as being acceptable or healthy? No it isn’t. I hope the Biggest Loser adjusts the rules in some way to ensure the weight loss is healthy weight loss, but again I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same for such an amazing prize.
What do you think?
My Workout Must Haves!
Okay, I realize this kinda counts as a Friday’s Favorites, but I’m asked a lot on Instagram about what heart rate monitor I use and what headphones I’m wearing so I figured I better just share it. Truth is I feel totally lost working out without either one of these!
1. Koss Headphones!
Remember in December I worked with FitFluential on a sponsored campaign for Koss headphones that were made for women’s ears? loved them so much I included them in my Holiday Gift Guide. Well, I’m still working with them, and they are seriously awesome!! I have always had ear pain when wearing headphones, but not with these!! They stay in and don’t hurt!! No, for real! They stay in! As a result not only am I enjoying music during my workouts I’ve also been listening to audio books! I’m currently listening to The Book Thief and love it for my elliptical workouts!
For a limited time these Koss Headphones (available in ear buds or ear clips) are available at Walgreens for $19.99! I hope you guys go and snag a pair or two! They really are SO awesome! Check out my original Koss review for more info!
Every single time I post a picture of my watch after a workout I get asked what watch I’m wearing. Well, it’s the Polar FT40 and it’s awesome! I’ve bought it for 2 years ago and still love it. I’ve had the opportunity to check out other heart rate monitor watches, but none are as awesome as this one! It displays calories burned, stores up to 50 training files, displays weekly workout history, and has backlight. (Which I’ve only had to use while spinning, but my kids think is fun to make it glow all the time!) It’s easy to clean and super easy to use. I paid nearly $200 for it, but you can get the black on on Amazon right now for $120!!

You’re doing a great job. 6 lbs is fantastic!
I don’t know, I think Rachel looks great. If you get past the shock factor, she doesn’t look unhealthy. Her muscle tone looks good. Look at her pelvis, there aren’t any real visual bones. She has been working with trainers to reach her current weight.
There are perfectly healthy ways to drop weight FAST, in fact my father went through this. In his case, he was monitored by doctors and dropped to a weight that a lot of people wouldn’t be comfortable with. However, it is a weight that his doctor feels he needs to be at in order to stay healthy. At this weight, his diabetes is also completely under control without any medication and he is living a heart healthy lifestyle. While everyone swore it was unhealthy, it one of the main reasons he’s alive today.
I think we also need to take into account the fact that every body structure is different. I am 5’9″. I can (but am not now, darn cookies) be perfectly healthy between 125-130 lbs. Most people wouldn’t like those numbers, but it’s where I am the healthiest.
Instead of being so critical of her weight loss, I think we should all be proud of her accomplishment. She looks great and I’d be willing to bet her doctor would agree that she is in a much better place from a health perspective.
You’re doing awesome, lady! Whole 30 isn’t easy, but your meals always look good. As for Rachel, I do think she lost the weight quickly, but as far as how she looks, she looks perfectly healthy to me. I think when you’re overweight (obese), especially for a long time or most of your life, and then lose the weight, you look different. If she was this size to begin with, would people say the same thing? I hope she stays HEALTHY now.
Way to go! You’re doing great. I was concerned about Rachel when she came out from behind those doors. I just hope that the people in her life will make sure that she is eating healthy and enough to support her rigorous workouts.
I just got a FitBit One and it’s really motivating me to get up and move. Seeing the lack of steps through the day makes me want to move – so I guess it’s working!
I agree that Rachel looked underweight. I thought she looked sick and already on the anerexic side. I was shocked. I hope now that the “competition” is over and she’s won that she will get to a healthy weight.
Keep it up girl! You can do it!
Great post! Good luck for your Las Vegas 5k Run….to complete a 5k in 30 minutes is one of my fitness goal too 🙂
Thank you Adah
Emily, what a great post! I just found your blog in searching for people who have written about Cox Communications’ Take Charge! program. (Which I am working on reviving to be more relevant for parents.)
I am a “runner” (in quotes because I have a pretty volatile love/hate with running. Fitness is a constant challenge/effort. Good luck in your goal for the Las Vegas 5k run. 30 minutes for a 5k is a great goal to shoot towards! Runners world spits out some great running/training plans on their SmartCoach tool.
I am going to add you to my Feedly!
xo,
Jessica
Hey girl if I can take the plunge and run a 5k last october and now leave Thursday for my firsy runDisney Event (5k and 10K) you can so do the 5K in May! I too have a love/hate (or maybe loathe) relationship with running (well and I still walk too) but getting out there and doing it makes me feel so good. One day I will be able to run the entire distances but right now getting out there and doing it is a huge accomplishment! So go you!!
My biggest work out must have are my Koss earbuds (I use the ones that go over your ear) as well as my Polar Ft4. I have to say though since getting the bluetooth enabled monitor for the chest strap I have had nothing but issues with it actually working well to monitor my HR.
You’re awesome! Can’t wait to hear about your runs!!
