This weekend I took my 7.5 year old to his first Marvel movie in the theater. We were lucky to see Doctor Strange in Dobly Cinema at the Town Square 18 AMC here in Las Vegas at it was so amazing. Walking into the theater we were greeted by a brilliant preview of the movie in the entry to the theater. My son said “WOW”! I think he summed that up really well!

We were running a little bit behind and so I wanted us to get to our seats quickly so that I could run back out for some snacks. The hallways are nice and wide and the aisles and seat numbers are really well marked. We quickly found our luxury recliner seats and my son got comfortable really quickly. I love that we were able to put the arm rest between our two seats up and snuggle under a blanket together the whole movie. I love the bigger seats even if you aren’t reclining or snuggling with the person next to you because it gives you the right amount of room to shift through the movie without disturbing the people around you as well.

The Movie Review

Marvel's Doctor Strange in Dolby Cinema Movie Review

Even those who aren’t fully up to date on the Marvel Comics world have likely heard of Doctor Stephen Strange, but it is true that he likely didn’t have the cultural appeal of say a Hulk or a Captain America so an average fan might not know his full back story. Marvel did a wonderful job explaining Stephen Strange’s origin story, and new fans will discover how a once prominent neurosurgeon turned into a sorcerer.

Marvel's Doctor Strange in Dolby Cinema Movie Review

For an origin story, I thought that The film is well paced throughout and even paves the way for Doctor Strange to become a key figure in future Marvel Studio movies. While I was told by my sister in law that this connection varies from the comics, we both understood that it was the easiest way to make it work for the movie.

Marvel's Doctor Strange in Dolby Cinema Movie Review

This film is visually stunning! Marvel was able to create a power that transcends time, space, and even dimension and share it in a completely thrilling and actually beautiful way. My sister in law pointed out to me, and I think she really nailed it on the head – the effects used to represent this is something similar to taking Inception and mixing in a bit of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. What is even more amazing is that the audience will not only enjoy the effects, but it really was done in a way that allowed them to believe in the powers shown on the screen and see how these alternate realities just might exist. Seeing it in Dolby Cinema only enhanced the visual believability of the movie.

Is Doctor Strange okay for Kids?

Doctor Strange plays on much the same level as the other Marvel films. If you have had no issue letting your child see any of the other Marvel films, then you should not have an issue with this movie, but I also agree with the PG 13 rating. The storyline is specific to adult issues, which a younger viewer may become bored with, but the effects are definitely enough to keep them entertained. There is a very intense, but well-shot beheading in the first few minutes of the movie, so if you are taking young children it that will be the worst of anything they will see. (Not a spoiler I can assure you). As an audience, we watch the moments right up until the actual beheading, but the camera diverts away to see it show as a shadow instead of it actually it taking place directly on seen.

Marvel's Doctor Strange in Dolby Cinema Movie Review

We both loved this movie. The cinematic effects, the story line, and the humor typical of a Marvel movie really me over. Being honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect with Doctor Strange, but by now I think I just have to trust that Marvel Studios know what they are doing. I’m so glad I got to enjoy a mommy-son date night to the movies in Dolby Cinema. I can’t wait to watch many more movies in this stunning AMC theater. Find a Dolby Cinema at AMC theater near you!

The long awaited Captain America film is now a reality for Marvel fans all across the country. Whether you’re a Marvel comics fan or simply a Marvel movie fan, you have already chosen a side. Even if only a little bit. Team Captain America or Team Iron Man, it won’t change how fantastic this movie actually is.

Marvel Studios has managed to hit a home run once again, which is the crazy kind of film science that shouldn’t be happening. They should be due for a flop. Oddly, I think Ant-Man or The Incredible Hulk is about the closest they have come to a flop, and those movies are actually pretty decent. I don’t know what magical formula Marvel Studios has come up with, but they need to keep it locked up tight.

Captain America: Civil War is a civil war between heroes and most importantly friends. I am sure you have seen the trailers by now and at least enough of the marketing hype to know that Steve Rodgers and Tony Stark have come to a disagreement. A disagreement over the most challenging concept for a superhero, doing the right thing. After a tragic event that shakes the world’s trust in not only the Avengers, but all superheroes, Captain America and his fellow teammates are forced to make a choice. This choice causes a ripple effect, and friend quickly turns into foe. It is never an easy fight when both sides believe they are fighting for the right purpose.

Marvel's Captain America Civil War Movie Review

The Russo Brothers return to direct Captain America: Civil War, sparing no opportunity for the high adrenaline action that we enjoyed from Captain America: Winter Soldier. So much so, you might feel a bit winded by the end of the movie. Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr reprise their roles as our beloved Avengers to bring, not only entertaining action and comedy, but intense drama as the feud between Iron Man and Cap heats up. The special effects are so ridiculous that during a Tony Stark scene I had trouble believing that the scene wasn’t in fact real.

Marvel's Captain America Civil War Movie Review

Marvel still knows how to bring in the crowds for these films, and a lot of it has to do with the variety of characters it has to offer. While many fan favorite characters show up from past Marvel Studio films, Civil War offers a few new faces with Black Panther and Spider-Man. There was enough care to engage the audience with subtle characterization, that while we may not know everything about them, we will happily await their respective upcoming films to learn that much more. Black Panther and Spider-man looked good, really good. The costumes were just right and subtle with a dash of realism, following suit with the other Mavel Studios established characters. While these two characters have been pretty public knowledge for this movie, Civil War still has a couple of surprises up its sleeve that will excite both new and old audiences.

Marvel's Captain America Civil War Movie Review

Comic fans do not distress. Outside of the most basic form of the plot line and catalysts of the comic counterpart, this movie is really not related to the comic storyline at all. It takes on its own fresh version of the famous superhero feud that fits well within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Being a comic fan myself, I had a lot of concerns when this was originally announced as a film plot, mostly due to the sheer vastness of superheroes that were involved in the comic story line. As with the MCU’s take on Ultron, these changes actually worked in the film’s favor.

Marvel's Captain America Civil War Movie Review

Since many of these films are hopeful family events, my opinion for an age limit would be around 11 or 10. There is not gore in the movie, but the movie’s actions scenes are just so intense that I wouldn’t feel comfortable with a child younger than that. The general opinion of Captain America: Winter Soldier is that the fights scenes and action were top notch. This immediately changed the tone into something grittier compared to the first Captain America movie. Step that kind of action up about five more levels, and you will be about where Civil War is.

Captain America: Civil War has it all. Action, comedy, drama, and a colorful wardrobe. In the end you may not want to pick a side, but you should definitely pick a seat in your nearest theater to take in this summer blockbuster.

Dolby Cinemas AMC Prime The Jungle Book Walt Disney Pictures

Synopsis:

Directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire. The all-star cast also includes Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of the fiercely protective mother wolf Raksha, and Giancarlo Esposito as the voice of wolf pack’s alpha male Akela. “The Jungle Book” seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world. The wild adventure swings into theaters in 3D on April 15, 2016.

A Geeky Girl’s Guide: Avengers: Age Of Ultron Movie Review https://ourknightlife.com/2015/04/a-geeky-girls-guide-avengers-age-of-ultron-movie-review.html https://ourknightlife.com/2015/04/a-geeky-girls-guide-avengers-age-of-ultron-movie-review.html#comments Fri, 01 May 2015 05:52:27 +0000 http://www.familylifeinlv.com/?p=19707 The second installment of the Avengers film franchise hit theaters everywhere today, and it’s the biggest and most anticipated film coming out of Marvel Studios so far. The largest question being, can Marvel do it again? The answer? Oh yes, Marvel most certainly can. Avengers: Age of Ultron just seems to further the point that Marvel Studios can’t seem to do any wrong.

Avengers, Marvel, Avenger: Age of Ultron Movie Review

All of your favorite Avengers are back and hit the ground running in the very first scene. Captain America leads his fellow teammates, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, against the villainous creation, Ultron. The Avengers are forced to face one of their biggest challenges yet: their deepest, darkest fears. The only question remaining is whether or not they can face them in time to stop Ultron from destroying the world.

Joss Whedon once again takes the driver’s seat for this momentous blockbuster proving for a second time just why legions of fans idolize his every action. His love of comics and Marvel are proven again as Avengers: Age of Ultron becomes another affectionate love letter. Whedon creates a well-balanced film that not only showcases some amazing visuals and action sequences, but a more dramatic and grittier side that just adds to the development of the characters. This is especially true with the Black Widow and Hawkeye.

Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton have yet to be blessed with their own standalone movies. Their roles as supporting characters have kept much of their background nonexistent in past films. Whedon opens up their stories enough to allow some larger insight into each’s characterization, allowing the viewer to get to know the two a little better. The best part? Whedon does this and balances it just enough that it does not take away from the main focus of the film. It isn’t a joke when critics say that Whedon has a knack with working with large ensemble casts.

(From left to right) Chris Hemsworth – Thor, Robert Downey Jr – Tony Stark, Chris Evans – Captain America

I would love to talk about Mr. Evans, Mr. Hemsworth, and Mr. Downey Jr., but they honestly have their roles down and should give nothing short of amazing performances after as many films that they each have under their individual belts. No, the ones to watch this time around are Scarlet Johansson and Jeremy Renner and also Mark Ruffalo. In Mr. Ruffalo’s case, this becomes the first time that an actor has played Bruce Banner twice for a movie, and he solidifies the reason why he should continue to do more.  Two other characters, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, are played by well-known, versatile actors, Arron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. Both are exceptional additions to the cast as well as intriguing characters.

Avengers, Marvel, Avenger: Age of Ultron Movie Review

Elizabeth Olsen – Scarlet Witch and Arron Taylor-Johnson – Quicksilver

As amazing as the film was, I will not lie and say that I didn’t have issues. These are very tiny issues in comparison and really are due to my love of the comic books. I had a difficult time separating the world of the comics from a couple of story lines that the movie offered. Honestly, it was small, and by no means, a reason to scare other comic book fans like myself. I just ask that you treat the film world as you would any of the multiple comic book universes. Avengers: Age of Ultron is a part of the Marvel Studios universe and is very much its own world.

Should you take your children to Avengers: Age of Ultron?

As this is a family friendly blog, we do need to answer the question of what age child this movie would be appropriate for.  The action, violence, and language run pretty much in line with the previous Avengers film. If you feel that your child shouldn’t watch the first one, best not to take them to this. It consists of the same types, but just a lot more of it in this film. It is rated PG-13.

If you and your family are assembling shields, hammers, and hulk fists at this very moment, because you just can’t stand the excitement? Then get ready to wave them in the air with pride and joy. Avengers: Age of Ultron is the summer movie blockbuster you just can’t miss out on.

If you enjoyed my Avengers: Age of Ultron movie review, when I’m not doing movie reviews for Emily on Our Knight Life you can find me blogging at A Geeky Girls Guide to Life.   All photos are belong to Marvel with permission to post. I was provided a free ticket to review this movie.

Sneak Peek! Disney Pixar’s INSIDE OUT https://ourknightlife.com/2014/10/disney-pixars-inside-out.html https://ourknightlife.com/2014/10/disney-pixars-inside-out.html#comments Thu, 02 Oct 2014 22:59:23 +0000 http://www.familylifeinlv.com/?p=18675 Disney Pixar movies have a special place in my home and in my heart. Not only do they entertain our family, but they all trigger emotions we as parents can relate to…

I mean, I can’t watch the end of Toy Story 3 without balling like a little baby! (And I know I’m not alone in this – it has been discussed amongst my group of mom friends on several occasions.)  I’ve laughed along side my son as he cracks up watching Mater on Cars and Cars2. I’ve been turned into a gooey puddle while watching WALL-E especially when my son turned to me and said, “They’re in love mom!”.

All these emotions resonate with Disney Pixar lovers young and old alike, and they happen to be the theme of the newest movie: Disney Pixar’s INSIDE OUT.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

"Dreamworks Pictures" "Need For Speed Movie" "Need for Speed Movie Review" "Aaron Paul"

In DreamWorks Pictures Need For Speed movie, Street racer, Tobey Marshall, is dealing with the recent loss of his father and trying to keep their custom auto shop afloat. Winning illegal street races here and there hasn’t been enough to keep up with the payments for the bank. When old rival Dino, stops by with an offer of a lifetime that would not only give them great recognition but help save the shop, Tobey has no choice but to accept against his better judgment. The partnership leads to a great sale and a great car, but egos flare up. A choice is made that will change Tobey and Dino’s life forever and gets Toby locked up.

After being in prison for two years, Tobey is out looking for vengeance and proof of his innocence. He decides to bet all of his chips on a race that is not only notorious for the massive payout, but it is also one that will definitely tempt his rival and the man who set him up, Dino. Not only does he need to get his band of merry men back together, but he needs a car that won’t just perform, but outshine the rest of the competition. What better way to make a statement then to use the very car that sealed Toby and Dino’s fate. Now all Toby has to do is make it to the race on time, find incriminating evidence against Dino, and avoid as many cops as possible, since he will be skipping probation with the race being on the other side of the country.

"Dreamworks Pictures" "Need For Speed Movie" "Need for Speed Movie Review" "Aaron Paul" "Fast Cars"

Inspired by the successful video game franchise, Need For Speed is an exciting thrill ride for every fan to enjoy. It has all of the fast cars and stunts that any action movie buff could ask for. It also has a well balance of humor that breaks the tension and exciting action scenes. There is a little romance, not so much as to divert the action. I appreciated that. It was probably hard enough to create a story based on a video game franchise that isn’t particularly known for plots in general, so choosing to tone down the romance and letting it movie gradually and naturally was an extremely wise choice in my opinion.

Exciting side note is that the film used all practical stunts. What does this translate into for the average movie goer? This means that there was no use of CGI at all throughout the film. This is a massively impressive feat that is shown through some of the jaw dropping and seat gripping car stunts. This was a risky choice in a movie world where CGI is the easy and usual go to choice, but I feel that the practical effects paid off for the film.

Having seen the Need For Speed in 3D, some of the above mentioned stunts have a few added layers that really make the movie a little more exciting. I want to point out that I do not believe the 3D feature is particularly necessary to enjoy the movie, it just adds to the entertainment. The standard format will be just as fun. Even though I haven’t personally experienced it, I might suggest looking into the D-BOX version of the film. I have been to a couple of D-BOX movies and am familiar with how seats move along with the film. I have a feeling, that this would be a fantastic choice for such an action packed film. The many racing and driving scenes will have anyone watching feel like they are racing down the streets along with Tobey.

"Dreamworks Pictures" "Need For Speed Movie" "Need for Speed Movie Review" "Aaron Paul"

With a great cast of Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, and the great Michael Keaton, you couldn’t ask for a better movie to have fun with. It is a great break from the work week, and could be a fantastic family outing. The movie is rated PG-13, so I would not recommend bringing along the youngest of viewers. I would suggest sticking to the suggested youngest age of thirteen, if you question it, but any child younger than that is up to your discretion and choice. Whether it is date night or family night, take the ride with Tobey and his friends and find out where the road takes you.

533 Reasons To Go See Delivery Man (Movie Review) https://ourknightlife.com/2013/11/533-reasons-to-go-see-delivery-man-movie-review.html https://ourknightlife.com/2013/11/533-reasons-to-go-see-delivery-man-movie-review.html#comments Sat, 23 Nov 2013 06:35:15 +0000 http://www.familylifeinlv.com/?p=17290

Delivery Man

Back in July I was one of 533 bloggers chosen to share an exclusive sneak peek to the Dreamworks Pictures movie Delivery Man.  1 Trailer – 533 bloggers!   Not quite as daunting as 1 man – 533 kids!!

In the movie Delivery Man Vince Vaughn plays a funny yet floundering man who finds out 20 years after making several deposits to his local  fertility clinic that he is the biological father to 533 children and they are actively seeking out his identity.

Delivery Man Kids

The problem is he’s not sure he can be a father since he doesn’t have his life together himself.  He’s in debt, struggling to maintain a relationship, and still trying to discover himself.

"Delivery Man Movie Review" "Delivery Man" "Colbie Smuthers" "Vince Vaughn"

So he sets out to start the daunting task (against the advice of his lawyer, best friend, and tired parent played by Chris Pratt) of meeting his kids without letting them know who is real identity is.  Each time he meets a child you never know what he is going to find.  Is the child happy and successful?  Struggling to discover themselves?  In the process he discovers a love for these children.  With each child he meets we fall more in love with Vaughn’s character and can’t help but get involved with wondering how things are going to turn out.

I went to see this movie with several of my mom friends and we all loved it.  We laughed, we cried, we had a wonderful time.  While took my girlfriends to see it, I easily could have been sitting with my husband, father, mother, brother, or by myself and enjoyed this as there really is something for everyone to identify in this movie.

I love the movies, but justifying the cost of a babysitter, movie tickets, and travel time to get out these days can be hard.  I want something that will have me thinking about it well after the movie is over, and this movie did just that!  It had everything I’d want in a movie.  A unique and fun story, comedic relief, relatability, and just the right amount of emotion.

Since I loved it so much I decided to share 533 reasons why you should go see this movie in the theaters.

533 Reasons To Go See Delivery Man

533. – It’s funny

532 – It’s endearing

532 – Chris Pratt is hysterical

531 – Vince Vaughn is relatable

530OH WHO AM I KIDDING – Just go see the movie!  Trust me – you will enjoy the heck out of it.

Delivery Man is rated PG-13 and opened everywhere on November 22, 2013.   It has a running time of 1 hour 45 minutes.

Synopsis:
Based on the publishing phenomenon, PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS continues the young demigod’s epic journey to fulfill his destiny. To save their world, Percy and his friends must find the fabled and magical Golden Fleece. Embarking on a treacherous odyssey into the uncharted waters of the Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle), they battle terrifying creatures, an army of zombies, and the ultimate Evil.

Review:
For a hero, some may consider a three year vacation a little lazy, but after saving all of Olympus, there is definitely some justification for it. Percy may not have been crusading across the world on various quests in his time off since returning the lightning bolt to Zeus, but he has continued to hone his many talents at Camp Half Blood.. Sadly now his sense of purpose has come into question. Even among his peers in a place he can finally call home, Percy doubts his destiny and place as a hero.

When the camp faces danger, Percy discovers a prophecy tying him to a threat that could destroy the world as he knows it. He must take arms once more flanked by old friends and a few new ones. Percy and his companions travel to the Sea of Monsters where he is faced with the choice of giving into destiny or writing his own.

Having not seen Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightening Thief since its initial release, I purposely chose not to refresh my memory to see how well the sequel stood on its own. While I enjoyed the initial film greatly, the sequel stood firmly upon itself. Any connections to the first movie are quickly explained as needed, leaving no confusion with the storyline.

Audiences can look forward to more Greek legends peppered throughout Percy’s quest that many enjoyed from the first one. Wonderment and action fill the movie as creatures of myth aid and fight Percy along his journey. A specific part I enjoyed was the day to day blending of myths and magic in our own real world lifestyles.

Logan Lerman wields Percy’s sword once more giving a performance that awes audiences with Percy’s epic heroism, but also gives us a young man who is very much just like everyone else. Besides the core young actors returning such as Brandon T. Jackson as Grover and Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth, special mention needs to be made of a few new actors joining the cast. The great Stanley Tucci, whose resume can speak for itself, joins his younger cast mates as Mr. D, adding comic relief to the perils of Camp Half Blood. Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans will be happy to see Anthony Head taking over the role of Chiron. I do feel that the comedy and fun award of the movie needs to be handed to Mr. Nathan Fillion in his portrayal of Hermes, the messenger god. Heads up to Firefly fans, I think Mr. Fillion got one little joke in as well.

While it may not be suitable for the tiniest of family members (8+ depending on your child), Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is a fun family film that will leave the whole family excited and amazed. Whether you watch the standard or the 3D version, if you plan on hanging out with Percy, you might want to play it safe and wear life jacket. You are definitely in for a ride.

Disclosure: I attended the movie as a member of the press.

This coming April 4th is my 6th wedding anniversary.  Normally we go back and forth on what we want to do to celebrate that day, but I can tell you without a doubt that if my husband isn’t deployed on April 4th, 2014 we will be at the Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie!  We both love spending date nights at the movies, and this is a picture we are both really looking forward to!
