“I participated in a Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for First Response. I received product samples as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation.”

Tomorrow is Father’s Day. Sadly, we won’t be able to celebrate right away with my husband, but we have a few tricks up our sleeve to make sure that even 1000 miles away he knows he is loved on his honorary day.

In the meantime – I thought I’d share the story of finding out we were pregnant for the first time. It all started with a First Response test (or eight…) and ended with my whispering to my husband in the light of a new day “You’re going to be a daddy.”

Two Pink Lines

We were married after dating for a couple of years on April 4, 2008. My husband was deployed with his job on May 4th, but returned home early with a knee injury on September 4th, and a month later I suspected we might be pregnant.

Together we went to Walgreens and looked over all the tests. It was really frustrating to see so many choices, but we decided to go with First Response because it said they could detect a pregnancy as early as six days before the day of your missed period.  We might have bought a few boxes of them. While in the store, I had noticed a co-worker had come in with her boys. I made my husband hold the tests and go straight to the register with them while I stayed looking at random items in case we were to be seen with them. Seems so silly now, but I didn’t want anyone to know until we knew for sure.

We went home and I quickly took one of the tests. I had drank a lot of water at that point, and so our positive was SO VERY FAINT. My husband didn’t want to believe it yet, so we tried another. However, it was the evening and by that point I had drank even more water, so it was a too diluted and my test came back negative.

We decided to wait until the morning like the directions said was best. We spent the remainder of the evening wondering was it positive? Could we be parents soon?  Looking back, it was one of my first glimpses into a behavior that I would come to know and love in my husband. He doesn’t let himself get overly excited about things like I do. He didn’t want to think we were, until we had the positive result.

The next morning, dawn woke me up. I’m not an early riser by nature, so I remember it very clearly. I crept into the bathroom and took our test. Almost immediately the two pink lines showed up on the first response test. I smiled, nervous, excited, anxious… And crept into bed and whispered to my husband, “You’re going to be a daddy. We are going to be parents.” A smile crept over his lips, and he pulled me in close. And even though it happened sooner than we had planned, I knew in that very moment what a great dad he was going to be.

A Brand We Can Trust

Recently I heard that First Response has improved the design of their tests to make taking it even easier, with a 50% wider strip to test on, a longer curved design to fit a woman’s hand better, and it can be used at any time of the day. No more anxious waiting until the first pee to test!

"Early Response Pregnancy Test" "First Response"

The last thing a woman needs is anything that makes it difficult to test, so I can personally appreciate this new design. First Response tests are widely available at big box stores, groceries, and drugstores ranging in price from $8.99-$15.99.

When it came time to test for our second, we turned to what we knew and trusted as I am sure we will do one day with our third and maybe fourth children – should we be so blessed…  Until then, I don’t really need a labeled day to celebrate the man I love and the father of my children. We are so lucky to have him and for everything he does for us.

When I was pregnant with both my boys I wanted to document as much of it as I could.  While some months felt like they couldn’t go any slower by the time I had my beautiful boys in my arms I felt like my pregnancy was just a tiny blip on my life’s radar.  I loved going back and reading what I blogged about my pregnancies, looking through the pictures I took, but I couldn’t help but with I had it all in one place.

Right after Baby D was born I was sent an early copy of From Pea to Pumpkin – A Pregnancy Journal to review.

Pea to Pumpkin Pregnancy Journal

I immediately loved the idea of the book, the simplicity of the journals, and the beautiful illustrations.  I have tucked my book away to keep for my next, and most likely last pregnancy.  It will serve as a beautiful keepsake for me and my last baby to one day look through and read.  I wish I had one for all of my boys.

About Pea to Pumpkin:

Through beautiful watercolor fruit and veggie illustrations and whimsical, relatable fill-in-the-blank prompts, From Pea to Pumpkin is a pregnancy journal that lets moms record each week of their baby’s unique journey, from crazy food cravings to those first incredible kicks.

The book is broken up into weeks (with corresponding baby is the size of … pictures) and trimesters and asks questions like: The hardest symptom of my pregnancy has been….? And each week has a prompt for you to share something about yourself with your unborn baby.

My VBAC Birth Story | Part 1 https://ourknightlife.com/2013/01/my-vbac-birth-story-part-1.html https://ourknightlife.com/2013/01/my-vbac-birth-story-part-1.html#comments Thu, 03 Jan 2013 09:02:04 +0000 http://www.familylifeinlv.com/?p=13726 Disclaimer: If you aren’t into reading birth stories and all the details that go along with them, I suggest you skip to the next post.  I will be sharing my full birth story here with all the fun/gross/normal details that go along with that.

Baby D’s VBAC Birth Story
  • Previous Cesarean Section
  • Gestational Diabetes
  • Very Big First Baby
  • Thick Meconium
  • Heart Decelerations
  • Double Wrapped Cord
  • Posterior Baby
  • Vacuum Delivery

To say that I had the cards stacked against a vaginal delivery would be an understatement.  Thankfully I was blessed with an OB who gave me my VBAC. An OB who was willing to give me and my body every opportunity to get it done, believed I could do it, and watched my baby like a hawk to make sure we were still on the right side of safe.

Speaking of safe…

I think it is safe to say that this baby boy wanted to let mama know he wasn’t going to do anything according to anyone else’s schedule.  It was decided a few weeks before my son came into this world, that due to my gestational diabetes, a predicted large baby, and my desire not to be induced I would be scheduled for a repeat C-section on December 6th, my son’s due date. That is unless my son decided to come on his own prior to that date in which case both my OB and my high-risk OB were willing to allow me to attempt to VBAC.  (Vaginal delivery after cesarean).  I was really hoping to avoid a repeat C-section and at 39 weeks I began to try any and all at home natural inductions methods.  To my surprise I was still pregnant the day before my due date and not really feeling any different.  I had been having bouts of long Braxton Hicks, but they never turned painful or regular.  At my last OB appointment I was told I was 2 cm dilated and soft, but still posterior and high. (This meant that my baby was “sunny-side up” which can make labor longer and more difficult.  Thankfully I didn’t ask what it meant until later…)

On December 5th I woke up and took what would be my last picture of this pregnancy.

"My VBAC Birth Story" "VBAC" "Birth Story" "Labor and Delivery" "Gestational Diabetes"

Squishy had preschool that afternoon, so I decided while he was there I was going to go walk the mall in a last ditch effort to get my labor started.  I spent 1.5 hours walking that mall, and let me tell you – I was a pregnancy cliché!  I’m sure I looked pretty silly waddling in circles around both levels of that mall.  Before long, I had to go pick up my son and I waddled back to my car.  I was feeling like baby was lower, and very uncomfortable, but no lasting contractions.

Since it was the last day I would spend with my son before I brought his baby brother home, I wanted to make sure he had a really great day.  Since pre-school lets out really close to his nap time we usually just go home, but today I surprised him by allowing him to go to the playground after school.  He was so happy.  As I sat and watched him, he ran and played with his school buddies.  Not too long before I was about to tell him he needed to get ready to go home, another mommy at the playground turned to me and said, “Um, your son just said he was going to jump off that ledge.” (See playground platform with pole to slide down about 8-10 feet off the ground.)  I looked at her and smiled, and said, “Oh, he won’t jump he is pretty cautious when it comes to things like this.”

Then my son screamed.

Yep, he jumped.  As I ran full speed towards him, he tried to stand and immediately collapsed.  He couldn’t put any weight on his leg.  Visions of broken femurs and shattered ankles flew through my head.  I heard myself yell, “WHY DID YOU JUMP? IT’S OKAY BABY, MAMA’S HERE. ”  As I got to him, he collapsed in my arms screaming.  I asked him where it hurt, and as I did, I noticed the other mommies were around me as well.  One happened to be a nurse and she jumped in and started to assess him while another mom made a make shift ice-pack.  Several tense tear-filled minutes later, it was determined that it was unlikely anything was broken, but I needed to watch him just in case.  I picked my 41 lb son up, grabbed his sock filled with Starbucks ice, and walked the long distance to my car.  I’m still not sure why he jumped.  He has always be so cautious to do anything risky on the playground, but I was very VERY thankful he was okay.  By the time we got home he wasn’t even limping, but I was having contractions that actually hurt.

After a quick lunch I put my son down for his nap.  He asked me to lay with him, and suddenly that seemed like the best idea in the world.  I had a lot I had planned to accomplish during his nap, but in that moment I couldn’t see anything better to do.

"My VBAC Birth Story" "VBAC" "Birth Story" "Labor and Delivery" "Gestational Diabetes"

I fell asleep snuggling with my son.  About 2 hours later to my surprise I woke up to a painful contraction.  I was sure they would have gone away if I laid down.  I laid there for another 10-15 minutes and had 3 more contractions that felt like they were coming in a pattern.

I got up, my son still sleeping and discovered a bit of bloody show.  I knew then that this was probably it.  I called my husband who had run out to do something and let him know.  By the time he came home not too much later, I was timing them.  They were 3-4 minutes apart but only lasting 45-1 minute.  My husband wanted to go the hospital right then, but I wasn’t sure.  I called my OB’s office and was informed by the after hours operator that if I thought I was in labor I needed to go to labor and delivery.  I asked her if I could have my OB paged because I was scheduled for a C-Section the next morning.  I was worried that they would send me home until my scheduled appointment.  She said she couldn’t do that, and to go into the hospital if I thought I was in labor.

So with no advice to be had from the OB I did what any girl does next… I called my mom.  She listened to me, and told me I should listen to my instincts but probably go in.  At least I think that’s what she said, I can’t really remember our conversation to well.  I spent the next hour trying to accomplish basic tasks and getting interrupted by contractions.  It took me forever to add the few things left to pack to my bag, and I decided that I couldn’t go until I ate something.  One giant honey crisp apple, 2 cheese sticks, and one very anxious husband later we were on our way to the hospital.

As we were walking into the hospital I joked with my husband that they may send me home if I wasn’t dilated enough.

That turned out to be a very bad joke.

With my first son, I not only spent a small fortune on disposable nursing pads I also ended up with so many nursing bras that didn’t work for me after a few months of breastfeeding because my breasts were no longer the size of cantaloupes and had adjusted to my baby’s needs.  But in the beginning when my milk came in I craved a comfortable bra that would not only support me, but change as my breasts did.  My pocket book is still cringing from the amount I spent on disposable pads.

Thankfully, a friend recommended I check out Milk Diapers during this pregnancy.

"breast pads" "Re-usable Breast pads" "Breastfeeding" "Nursing" "Nursing Pads"

Milk Diapers are mostly known for their fantastic and absorbent re-usable breast pads.  Their breast pads are made from 100% breathable cotton pads, and come in 4/5 layer protection or Moisture Guard Pads.  The Moisture Guard Pads have a layer of terry backed  polyurethane laminate which allows moisture and air to evaporate through its porous nature.

"breastfeeding" "nursing" "Re-usable Breast Pads" "Nrusing Pads" "Milk Diapers"

I was able to check out a sample package of the pads.  I love that they are pre-shrunk so that I didn’t have any issues washing them.  I loved the darting in the pad that allowed for a great fit, and good air flow.  I did find that I preferred the Moisture Guard Pads for myself.  Since my baby is only 3 weeks old, my milk is still trying to adjust to his needs.  I let down a lot, and there for leak a lot.  The added layer of polyurethane laminate was very much appreciated and has saved me from several embarrassing public let-downs.  I suspect that the 4/5 layer pads will be perfect for later in my breastfeeding endeavor when I don’t spontaneously let-down.  In fact I liked them so much I just ordered some more!

I was also really excited to see that Milk Diapers has done something no other nursing support company has managed to do.  They created a nursing bra that is designed to change with you.  By adding 4 snaps on the chest band of The CozyBra, I am able to adjust it as my breasts change.   This is the ONLY nursing bra I own that comfortably accommodates all my needs as a breastfeeding mom. Perfect for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and beyond!  Plus it is crazy comfortable with its soft cotton and lace straps.  Never once did I complain to my husband while wearing this bra, but I am pretty sure I have with 90% of my other nursing bras!

Still Pregnant! 39 Week Baby Bump Pregnancy Update https://ourknightlife.com/2012/11/39-week-baby-bump-pregnancy-update.html https://ourknightlife.com/2012/11/39-week-baby-bump-pregnancy-update.html#comments Fri, 30 Nov 2012 08:50:25 +0000 http://www.familylifeinlv.com/?p=13482 39 weeks pregnant and still baking baby Monster Truck!

I seriously didn’t think I would make it here, but I don’t know why I thought I wouldn’t.  My hubs and I both are stubborn, and I think this little man is just going to do things on his own schedule!

I must say, I am really happy I took all these pictures!  Mostly in similar shirts, but regardless, it is hard to tell looking at yourself daily how much you actually change.  I thought things were feeling heavier this week, and by the looks of it, I did get bigger in just one week, and much lower!

I am actually still feeling pretty good.  Lots of Braxton Hicks, a little less patience by the end of the day, but overall, I really can’t complain.  I just can’t believe I am less than 1 week away to holding my second son in my arms.

I can really see the drop in the last week.  My chiropractor told me today I looked to be in excellent position.  I wonder what my OB will say tomorrow!?  The only “natural induction” I am really actively pursuing is acupressure from my Chiropractor after she adjusts my hips. I hate spicy food, and castor oil just seems like a bad idea to me.  I may ask my OB to strip my membranes tomorrow as it will be my last prenatal visit.

"38 week baby bump" "39 week baby bump" "Pregnancy Belly Drop"

I couldn’t leave this post without giving a little shout out to the soon-to-be big brother!  He has been such a trooper lately.  With hubs working 6am-2pm, and me having no less than 4 doctors appointments per week, he has been dragged to quite a few appointments lately.  Usually, he is pretty awesome and just hangs out playing the iPad while mommy gets monitored.

I try and schedule appointments during preschool, but even then it doesn’t always turn out as planned.  This week I went in during preschool, but they didn’t have an Ultrasound room available, so after monitoring, I headed back to pick him up, and then back to the doctor’s office.  As much as he drives me nuts, he is a pretty great little boy!

I can not wait to see him meet his baby brother!

I figured I should probably do another journal update since I haven’t done one since my 36 week journal.  Plus for 100% sure this time next week I will be holding a little baby Knight in my arms.  Whether he comes on his own or waits til his scheduled c/s only time will tell.  This will be my last journal entry for baby Monster Truck while he is still in my belly!

How far along? 39 weeks 1 day

Total weight gain:  When all is said and done I will have put on just over 40 lbs for this pregnancy.  I would have liked it to be a smaller number, but I am okay with it as it is less than my last pregnancy!

Maternity clothes? I am actually almost too big for some of my maternity clothes… :O

Stretch marks? In the past two weeks my old stretch marks have turned some pretty shades of red…

Sleep: Pregnancy insomnia has kicked in full force!  Lying down is pretty painful.  I do still take my almost daily naps though…

Best moment this week: Seeing my belly has dropped!

Miss Anything? While I am still dreaming of Lemon Danish… I am pretty much not eating too much these days… I have no room left for food!

Movement: My belly is now a complete alien takeover zone!

Food cravings: Mexican Pizza’s from Taco bell without beef have been a bi-weekly craving (boo!), and hummus.  I love hummus.

Anything making you queasy or sick:  Chicken and too much of any food.

Fitness: Does watching my son swim at Lifetime Fitness count? LOL.  Just daily walks at this point.

Labor Signs: A LOT of Braxton Hicks. Baby has certainly dropped.

Symptoms: Heartburn, Sciatic, SPD, Gestational Diabetes.

Belly Button in or out? Half in half out.

Wedding rings on or off? Off.

Happy or Moody most of the time:  Depends on the day!

Looking forward to: Meeting my son!

NOT looking forward to: Wondering daily if I am in labor!

STILL NEED TO DO: Pack hospital bag! Name this baby. Install Co-Sleeper.

WISH ME LUCK!

Everly Grey Logo

What I love most about it is their styles are exactly what I would purchase even if I wasn’t pregnant.  In fact all of their fashions are things I would normally purchase which is what I love!  No more feeling like you have to change your style to accommodate your growing bump!  If I knew I was still going to be pregnant during the holidays I would love to purchase this sweater/jacket which was recently featured in the Fall 2012 Pregnancy and Newborn guide!

I could pretty much purchase the whole site.  I love the classic look of the designs, they really have fashions that work for every day and every occasion.  I had the opportunity to check out three super cute tops to show of my baby bump in style.

IMG_5942_thumb12IMG_5947_thumb10

This first top is one of my favorites – this tunic style Henley top made be feel fashionable and covered at the same time.  The fabric was so soft I often wished I could sleep in it too!  I love the detailing on the sleeves, and can easily see myself using the Luna Top as a great post partum outfit option as well!  This top also comes in Fiesta (orange) and Heather Grey!

The second top I picked out was a combination maternity/nursing top.  It has an extra panel of fabric below the front of the shirt that allows you to lift and nurse at ease.  Plus the design is so classic I could dress this up or wear it with jeans like I did here!  The Prima Maternity/Nursing Top is one I know will carry me through the rest of my pregnancy and many many months of nursing!

About the Prima Nursing Top:

Sure to become your favorite maternity and nursing top, our Prima Top pulls double duty as a cool, casual maternity top and a nursing top after baby arrives. I also picked up this crazy comfortable cotton top.  It is so soft, you may forget you aren’t wearing your pajamas.  However, at 37 weeks pregnant, my bump was a bit too big for this top!  for me personally this top would be better option for early pregnancy and the few month post partum.  I think the Violet top would be very great for covering my soft belly as it returns to it’s new normal.  I look forward to incorporating it in my wardrobe after baby is born!  This top also comes in violet!

I may not have even had my second child yet, but I am already thinking of ways to be more active post-baby.  One of the things I plan on doing a lot more of are morning walks.  I have always liked to do these, but now my son is asking to go on them more often, which I absolutely love.  While I won’t be cleared for real exercise for a few weeks post baby I can get out and walk around the neighborhood with my son.

I have to say, one of the things that is making him want to get out and walk with mommy are his new Reebok Kids ZigLight Electrify shoes.  They are super cool to my three year old, and he has decided that he can only wear them to workout in…

(You know those moments when you don’t think your children are paying attention, well they are! My three year old has picked up on the fact that mommy has shoes she only wears for exercise and now my son does too!)

I have to admit, seeing his new “flying shoes” as he calls them, makes me really want a pair of my own, but I will wait until the late trimester pregnancy foot swelling goes down before I venture out to get my own pair!

About Reebok ZigLite Electrify

These shoes have a unique zigzag sole and a bright, breathable upper.  They are extremely light, and really allow my son to do anything active while wearing them.  Whether he is walking with me, running like a crazy toddler, digging in the dirt, or jumping from boulder to boulder, he can do so knowing these shoes will keep up with him.  They seem to also have great grip to them!  At least that’s what my son tells me while he is climbing anything he can!

Whether baby comes tomorrow or waits until his due date, you can be sure within a few weeks of having this little boy, his big brother and I will be hitting the local pathways around our neighborhood with some super cool, and fun shoes!  After all, toddlers really know how to #GetAfterIt too!

Pretty Pushers Delivery Gown #Giveaway {September Sprinkles} US https://ourknightlife.com/2012/10/pretty-pushers-delivery-gown-giveaway-september-sprinkles-us.html https://ourknightlife.com/2012/10/pretty-pushers-delivery-gown-giveaway-september-sprinkles-us.html#comments Thu, 04 Oct 2012 20:00:34 +0000 http://www.familylifeinlv.com/?p=12731 We have all seen celebrities doing it on reality TV shows, but did you know you don’t always have to wear that UGLY hospital gown?  There are companies like Pretty Pushers that offer affordable delivery gowns that allow you to really be in the moment with your labor, and not wearing the same hospital gown that patients who are sick have to wear.

About Pretty Pushers

It will be the hardest work you ever do and you should feel confident, beautiful, and comfortable while doing it! Don’t be at the mercy of the hospital gown or even an old night shirt…this is a big deal! After much research and consideration of the modern labor experience, Pretty Pushers has created fashionable and functional products specific to delivery day.

Our labor gowns are one-size-fits-most, composed of 100% cotton stretch jersey. The slip-on halter neck and diagonal cut garment is not only flattering but makes sense…there are openings which provide access for fetal monitors, the epidural, and other IVs if needed.

It is also really great that they are only $24/$28( for plus sized and patterns)!  While they are much nicer then your hospital gown there are no frills to them. They are made to be thrown out after delivery not washed.  The edges are unsewn and they have no trim.  In fact they are made with as few seams as possible.  I also love that they are made in the USA, and work had to ensure their packaging is environmentally friendly as well!

With Pretty Pushers you get a gown that only you will wear, is pretty, and will look great in your pictures as a new family!  After-all, after 40 weeks and a lot of hard work, why shouldn’t you look fabulous!

TWO lucky readers are going to to win a pretty pushers gown of their choice!

Baby’s First Image Las Vegas | 3D Ultrasounds During Pregnancy https://ourknightlife.com/2012/09/babys-first-image-3d-ultrasounds-during-pregnancy.html https://ourknightlife.com/2012/09/babys-first-image-3d-ultrasounds-during-pregnancy.html#comments Fri, 28 Sep 2012 20:40:53 +0000 http://www.familylifeinlv.com/?p=12584

You may remember me mentioning in my 28 week pregnancy update that two weeks ago I got the amazing privilege of seeing something that is truly amazing.  I saw my baby in 3d/4d!  I didn’t do this with my first son, but really wanted to try it this pregnancy as my husband is deployed and I thought it would be a neat way for him to see what was actually happening while he was away.

After looking into my options, it became clear the leader in the 3d/4d imagery field here in Las Vegas was Baby’s First Image.  Maria has been doing ultrasounds for nearly 20 years now. She is a veteran of the US Navy and a trained Ultrasound Technetium.  Maria is thrilled to be able to offer this service to both local Las Vegas families and visitors.

“Often times couples come to Las Vegas for a vacation, and since there isn’t much to do here for a pregnant mother, her spouse will surprise her with a 3d/4d ultrasound.  I have had people come from all over the world to my office for this service.” – Maria (Owner of Baby’s First Image)

When I stepped into the office I could see why her service is so popular.  She really caters to the expecting parents and their family!

We are proud to serve in the Southwest Las Vegas area since 2006. Through the art of 3D/4D Technology, we make bonding with your little Rock Star fun and an unforgettable experience — a once-in-a-lifetime moment for parents-to-be to treasure! Enjoy this special event with your family and guests in our large and comfortable viewing room, equipped with our 100” screen as a personal screening of your baby.

The “viewing room” was huge and very comfortable for mom and family!  I imagine Maria worked really hard to make sure everyone was comfortable during the screening so that the focus was truly on the baby and the experience.

I came in for the “Peek-A-Boo” Session and was so excited to see my little man! I was just hoping he would cooperate!  Baby’s First Image has a wide variety of packages and add-ons so that each family can tailor it to fit their needs!

Upon arrival I was greeted by Maria and my son as well as good friend and her son were escorted into the viewing room.  I had brought my friend Alex for backup with Squishy, but didn’t plan on our two boys having so much energy.  Thankfully Maria was very sweet about the whole thing, and we were able to get them settled for a bit and see my baby Monster Truck!

Baby Monster Truck is gorgeous! I was so in awe of everything I saw.  I learned that he was still breech (28 weeks, so plenty of time for him to flip still), with his legs high over his head.  Many times during the session he bumped his knees into his face!  I saw his cord, and of course no one could miss those chubby cheeks!  We had a gender verification, but it took awhile to see as he was covering his privates with his hand!  Silly baby!

I was so surprised by how much he looked like Squishy did when he was born.  Maria even showed us that we could see his hair!  I loved every second of the session and seeing my little man.  At the end of the session I was given my photos on a CD, my DVD of the session, and so hard copies to add to his baby book!  I couldn’t wait to send them off to my husband!

My husband was so giddy after seeing them. He loved seeing our second son in such detail.  That was a gift that I would do again and again if I could!

Thank you Baby’s First Image for such a great and comfortable experience.  If you have a chance to see you baby like this, I highly recommend it.  Truly a little miracle of modern technology!
