Conversations with a toddler…

January 9, 2012 By Emily 19 Comments

"Flying with a toddler"
Flying in his CARES harness

If you are or have ever been a parent to a toddler you know that what they say isn’t always what they want.

Case in point?

Check out this recent conversation I had with my 2.5 year old at the airport.

**Just so you know paygil=Bagel in Squishy-ese**

Me: Squishy, do you want a bagel while we wait for the airplane?

Squishy: YES!ย  Paygil, Paygil!

Me: Okay, well let’s go use the potty and then have a bagel.

Squishy: YES! Potty, Paygil!

After potty we got in line at which point Squishy noticed they had muffins too.

Squishy: Look mommy! Muffins! Chocolate Chip Muffins!

Me: Those are blueberry muffins baby, do you want a muffin or a bagel?

Squishy: NO PAYGIL, CHOCOLATE CHIP MUFFIN!

Me: Okay, but it is blueberry.ย  Do you want a blueberry muffin or a bagel?

Squishy: MUFFIN! Please mommy, muffin.

Me: Okay (To sales associate.) May I please have a blueberry muffin and a whole wheat honey bagel.

Squishy: NO PAYGIL mommy, CHOCOLATE CHIP MUFFIN!

(Apparently he only heard the bagel part.)

Me: Yes, baby I got you a muffin!

Squishy: YAY!! Thank you mommy, thank you.

(He was really excited about this darn muffin!)

Me: Okay baby, here is your muffin.ย  (I give him said muffin, and begin to eat a half of my bagel)

Squishy: Mommy, what’s that?

Me: It’s my bagel, you got a muffin, I got a bagel.

Squishy: NO Muffin mommy, I want Paygil

And such is the conversation and life with a toddler…

What cute things has your toddler made you do?ย  Changed their mind on or said recently?

The other day my 2 yr old asked me, “What did your husband just say?” He’s really into interpersonal relationships right now, and he’s amazed that his Abuela is my mom and that his Great Papa is his Abuela’s dad. And for the record, my husband is also his dad.

That is great! Mine is really into putting labels on people. All older people are grandma or grandpa, and all couples are a mommy and daddy. Your little guy is smart!!

When my son was 3/almost 4 (I know not “toddler” age) we were in his room and he was trying to tattle on his younger sister. I told him he had no room to talk (and briefly thought he wouldnt understand that). Before I could correct myself he said “Yes I do mom, I have room here and here and here” while he was pointing around his room……. That was the moment I knew I had a smart alleck for a kid and was in trouble! My daughter is just as bad lol

LOL! Love it. Reminds me of when my boys were little, little. Although they still seem to like whatever I’m having better.

C’s third birthday was on the 4th and then we had his party Saturday. We had a special family celebration on the 4th and he was so excited. He loved blowing out the candles and wanted to do it over and over again. All week every time anyone had cake he wanted them to light a candle and sing Happy Birthday to him.

My eldest once saw a kerosene wick lamp in the antique store. He pointed and said, “Look. A shoelace maker.” My son is now 17 and I still smile at this memory.
