Spring is right around the corner and so it seems are all the baby showers! Getting gifts for baby showers can be tricky. Plus having just boxes of clothes or diapers to open can get pretty boring. One of my good friends is currently pregnant and she told me her mom was giving her a shower. I offered to help out with the desserts and decorations. I knew right away I wanted to attempt a diaper cake!
We had decided on an Elephant Diaper Cake theme and a lot of diaper cakes use ribbon, blankets, toys, and diapers! I knew a girl who made a diaper cake a few years ago and she said it took her hours! I was a little worried – but this cake came together in less than an hour!
Supplies:
- Rubber Bands
- Straight Pins
- Ribbon
- 1 lovey with animal head
- 1 small package of diapers (I used Pampers size 1- 35 count)
- 1 set of 4 receiving blankets
- 1 swaddle blanket
The first thing I did was roll up the diapers and secure each with a rubber band.
I started with the top layer as I thought it would be less daunting! I took the blanket part of the lovey and folded it and used a rubber band to secure it together. Then I put rolled up diapers around the lovey and secured those with a rubber band. I used 8 of my 35 diapers on the top layer. Lastly I used my ribbon on this layer to make a bow to hide the rubber bands.
For the second layer, I used two of the receiving blankets in the middle of the layer. I folded them so they were the same height as the diapers and then rolled them up. I rolled the Green blanket, then the grey stripes around the green blanket. these were secured with a rubber band. Then I surrounded those with a layer of rolled diapers. For this layer I used 11 diapers. Lastly, I folded another receiving blanket so the embroidered elephant was front and center and wrapped that around the layer. It was secured with some straight pins in the back.
For the third layer, I used my last receiving blanket on the inside – rolled and secured with a rubber band. Then I put one layer of 8 diapers around the blanket, also secured with a rubber band. I made a second layer of diapers- but I only had enough to go 3/4 of the way around. So the last 8 diapers go most of the way around. I folded my swaddle blanket so the pattern was centered and wrapped it around the second layer of diapers. Since the swaddle blanket was much longer, I folded it where the diapers didn’t make a second layer. This was secured with straight pins.
I just stacked the layers together – if it is windy you may need to use a small dowel rod down the inside to keep them from falling over. I displayed the cake on my glass cake stand so it was up off the table from the food and easier to see!
Have you ever made a diaper cake? If so, let me know!
