To say I liked the movie The Help is like saying I like chocolate…
I LOVED this movie. Having read the book (by Kathryn Stockett, a #1 New York best selling novel) with my local mommy book club, I was pretty worried when I heard it was being turned into a movie.
I worried that they wouldn’t be able to cast the movie to live up to the strength and emotional connection to the characters you have after reading the books.
However, I am here to tell you DreamWorks Pictures ROCKED the casting of this movie!
Cast:
Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Allison Janney, Chris Lowell, Sissy Spacek, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Cicely Tyson, Mike Vogel.
What I love about this cast is you see some BIG NAMES here, but not one of them stood out from the next. You really forget you are watching celebrities and feel like you are in the thick of the south during the civil unrest!
Genre: Drama
Rating: PG-13
U.S. Release date: August 10, 2011
About the Movie:
Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.
Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, “The Help” is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.
Word of advice:
DON’T FORGET THE KLEENEX!!! Trust you me! You will NEED them.
I was fortunate enough to watch the premiere of this movie with a whole theater of bloggers at Blogher11 in San Diego. If you looked around the theater you would be hard-pressed to find a dry eye.
Thank goodness they served up cocktails after the event!!
Run to the theaters to see The Help! You will not regret it!

Oh, good. I’m so glad the movie turned out well. I read the book and loved it, so I, too, was worried about it being transformed into a movie!

There were a few things left out from the book – but it was understandable considering the time limit… I really LOVED it – so much so I am seeing it again next week! LOL
