Every year during the holidays I find a few ways to give back to the community here in Las Vegas. Okay, really I do this all year long, but during the holidays it has an extra special feel to it.
So many people around us could use just a little extra during the holiday season. In addition to adopting a family as part of our playgroup, donating a couple of toys to toys for tots, and our donations to charities that we pick out each year (we usually pick 1-2 each holiday season), this year I will be making a stocking filled with Disney goodies to giveaway to a child in need as part of Champions For Kids.
Our Mission
We work to mobilize MILLIONS of people to improve the lives of children in their communities.
Champions for Kids began with a core commitment: to improve the lives of children through the leverage of people. We are motivated by one purpose—to support people and organizations working to make our communities a better place for children.Champions for Kids is entering our seventh year. In six years, we have provided over $500,000 in challenge grants and have seen many of these grants exceed the challenge. We have worked closely with 48 organizations who serve over 180,000 children.
This year, with the support from Disney and several corporate partners, we launched our first SIMPLE Service Project, The Champions for Kids Holiday Stocking Stuffer Party. Over 650 people leveraged their influence to touch the lives of over three thousand children in their communities. It was a SIMPLE launch. But people caught the idea—and did this SIMPLE Service Project.
I am participating in the Champions for Kids Simple Service Project with the support of Disney to put together one stocking filled with Disney goodies purchased at Walmart. When it came to picking out what child would be the recipient of this stocking, I knew I wanted to reach out to a military contact. They provided me with information on two children who are spending this holiday without one of their parents because they are deployed overseas. She told me I could pick either one. But really, I can’t pick only one. How can you pick between two children who both are in need of a little extra love and support this holiday season. So I will be creating two stockings for these children.
I really look forward to shopping for this stocking. I love Disney, and I can only imagine how excited these children will be to get this stocking. It feels really great to giveback to those who need it. I will be bringing my sister in law with me to shop as she is a huge Disney lover too, and my son. I try to bring him along to any event where we are doing something for others. I hope he will learn the pure joy that can only come from helping others.

We did this every year that my kids were in elementary school. Now we do it through our church. I just love these programs. And I agree, it’s so hard to choose just one “deserving” kid, when all kids want to wake up to a present!
