About John Carter
John Carter is based on the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, “A Princess of Mars.” John Carter(Taylor Kitsch) is a Civil War veteran, who fought for Virginia and the Confederacy.
After the war he tries to make his fortune by searching for gold in the desert. While in the desert, Carter is chased by Apaches, and he has a out-of-body experience that takes him to Mars.
Once on Mars he encounters the Tar Takas (Willem Dafoe) leader of the Tharks (big green martians), and soon falls in love with Dejah Thoris(Lynn Collins) princess of the Helium.
He struggles with overcoming his past to save his future. Action and adventure ensue!
3 Reasons Why You Should See John Carter
The special effects are fantastic. They really compliment the story, and keep you wondering what is coming next. They allow the characters to come to life on the screen, and add dimension to the movie. I was even a fan of the 3D which is something I don’t think I have ever said about a movie before in my life.
It’s funny! I don’t know about you, but I didn’t go into John Carter expecting to laugh, but laugh I did. A lot! Woola (The “monster dog”) was both my hubs and my favorite character. He had the whole audience laughing at several points in the movie.
Willem Dafoe played another stand out character; Tars Tarkas leader of the Tharks. He is witty and sarcastic, yet lovable.
It’s family friendly. The rating on the movie is a PG-13. I would probably be okay with my son seeing this around the age of 10, but you know your child best. While there is no overt blood, it is fully implied (they bleed blue on Mars), and there is mild violence. However, the story line was one that had something for the whole family. While the children would love the adventure of the story, your husband and you would enjoy the action, and the love story to be sweet and relatable.

Great review! I totally agree with everything you said. My husband and I both loved this movie, even though I was pretty confused up until the end. I want to watch it again to pick up on things I might have missed.

I LOVED John Carter, and if you doubt it I’ve seen it 7 times. 😉 Yep, I kinda got addicted. For me it felt different from anything I’d seen before. Just the mood, the pace, the performances and the creatures and tech of the world were so satisfying for me. I miss it now that it’s gone from theaters and I’ve pre-ordered the DVD/BluRay. I wish more people had gone to see it. It frustrates me that a few bad reviews (most were good) had the power to turn off the majority of the US public from going to see it. I’m part of a fan movement to get the sequel made (promoting the DVD and film in general). It’s fun and we hope to make it happen as other fans have done in the past. Anyway, thanks for very a nice review and writeup! 😀
