Disney Pixar’s #BRAVE Movie Review

June 20, 2012 By Emily 20 Comments

"Disney Pixar" "Disney Pixar's BRAVE" 'BRAVE movie" "Merida"

When it was first announced that Disney Pixar was making a film that would feature it’s first female heroine, I knew then that they could have a potential box office smash on their hands.  After seeing Brave tonight I can tell you that this movie will not disappoint!

Brave follows Merida, whose personality is as big and fiery as her red curly hair, as she learns that changing her fate is about finding the courage inside herself.

I knew this was a coming of age story, but I didn’t expect it to be such a loving family story as well.  I really enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Merida and her mother (Queen Elinor).  As an adult I found myself relating to many of the things Merida was struggling with.   On some level I believe every young person fights with their parents to be heard and understood. Now a parent myself it was really interesting to find myself identifying with Queen Elinor’s feelings as well.

Disney really did a wonderful job of sharing the struggles young people and parents go through to be understood by each other, and really showed both sides of the situation in a relate-able manner for both children and adults.  Merida learns that she needs to have courage and be brave in order to change her fate, but with out the help of her family none of that would have been possible.  It is a great lesson to see come to life on the big screen.

You can expect to laugh, cry, and be blown away by this movie.   Not only was the story beautiful, but the advances in the animation from even just the last Disney Pixar movie is reason alone to see this movie.  It is a stunning and visual treat to behold.  The intricacies that were added to the characters are simply incredible.

Is this movie suitable for young children?  I really think it depends on your child.  There is a pretty intense few scenes with a bear that is questionable for younger audiences. (This movie is rated PG). I highly doubt my 3 year old son would be scared by this movie, but I also know he has many friends who would be.  You know your child the best.  Even though this movie is a Disney movie, I will still use the opportunity to talk to my son about what is real and what is pretend.

BRAVE arrives in theaters everywhere on June 22nd!

I was treated to an early screening as a member of the media.  All thoughts and opinions are 100% honest and my own.

It totally depends on the child, doesn’t it? I hope those who do bring their kids have a great experience!

I noticed over the weekend a lot of my Facebook friends that took their kids, seemed to think it was too scary/intense for younger kids. I want to see it, by my 9-year-old son, says it’s for girls and doesn’t want to see it. 🙂
