Disney’s OZ The Great and Powerful is Real Magic! #DisneyOZ

March 8, 2013 By Emily 31 Comments

Disney’s OZ The Great and Powerful twists in to movie theaters today, and it is a movie not to miss on the big screen.

About OZ The Great and Powerful:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.

My Review:

From the moment the movie starts I couldn’t help myself from falling into the story.  Raimi’s directing genius mixed with true Disney magic and whim, this movie will like the original Wizard of OZ transform you to a different place and time for the duration of the movie.  Stunning visuals and costumes allow your imagination to follow the Wizard on own journey down the yellow brick road.  With subtle foreshadowing, excellent acting, and a bit of cinematic magic the story carries you through the whole movie.

While all the actors did and amazing job, I personally thought Michelle Williams as Glinda the Good stole the whole movie.  She was sweet and innocent without being overly so, and the sly wickedness of Evanora (Rachel Weisz) was the perfect contrast to William’s character.  James Franco sure plays a Wizardly con-man with ease with a smile that could go on for days, sure to convince every movie goer of his wizardly if not womanizing abilities!

I challenge you not to fall in love with the China Girl and laugh at Finley the flying monkey, as I am positive that would be impossible.

I am not usually a fan of movies in 3D, but I loved touches that viewing this film in 3D offered.  It was just enough to be cool, but not overwhelming.  The imagery and the land of OZ is more stunning then ever, but at the same time did not deviate or take away from the land we all feel in love with as children.

While the movie is rated PG there were several parts of the movie, like as in The Wizard of OZ ,that I felt would be scary to younger audiences and had me jumping out of my seat.  My recommendation would be for ages five and up depending on your child’s maturity level.  Whether you go with your family or with friends, this movie is sure to leave you nostalgic for the Disney of years past and lost in the character’s story long after you leave the theater!

OZ The Great and Powerful is rated PG and has a run-time of 127 minutes.  Be sure to Like them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OzTheGreatAndPowerful and follow on Twitter: Twitter.com/disneyozmovie.

I was invited to see this movie as part of an early screening.  All thoughts and opinions are my own. Images from Disney Media.

I couldn’t agree with you more, China Girl & Finley were fantastic. I think I enjoyed them and Tony Cox most of all. Thanks for sharing!

Finley was hands down my favorite character and I agree that all the actors did a great job. I’m not a 3-D fan either (glad I’m not alone on that) and pleasantly surprised how much I liked this one. Great post!

Thanks for the review. I had wondered if I should take my son to this. I think I will try to see it and wait to show it to him at home (where I can pause and talk to him about it.)

The stills make this movie look amazing and the cast is so great, I have to see it!

My daughter is going tomorrow. She is so excited. My 6 year does not want to see it because she thinks the commercials are scary. I remember being scared of the original when I was little.

I’m not a fan of 3D movies either but once in a while they really do a good job with them… The Hobbit Movie was one of them. I’m guessing that Oz will be another one that is amazing.

James Franco annoys me. His voice, facial expressions, acting… I just can’t stand it. I tried to love this movie but I just can’t. I did enjoy china girl and she made me laugh as well as Finley
