Last week I had the amazing opportunity to sit down and interview the men of REAL STEEL.
Talk about a nice looking group of men huh!?
(from left to right) Director Shawn Levy, Boxing guru Sugar Ray Leonard, Actor Anthony Mackie, Actor Hugh Jackman.
I thought I would share a little bit about what the men of REAL STEEL had to say and share.
Director Shawn Levy
I don’t know what I expected Shawn Levy to be like, but I have to tell you Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum movies, Date Night) was very personable, down to earth, and extremely endearing.
I have this list of people whom I would love to have dinner with. You know, get a whole variety of people in one room and have a wonderful evening of conversation, stories, and laughter. After meeting Shawn Levy, I have added him to that list!
- Shawn isn’t known for directing action movies. So we asked him what made him take on this action film. This is what he had to say.
“And so I, it’s interesting, I view ‘Real Steel’ as a departure in that it’s a drama and an action drama. But I view it very consistent with ‘Night at the Museum’ in that it’s a movie, at least, in the way I’ve seen people react to it like it’s still a kind of a fun time for {the whole} family.”
- 3 of Shawn’s 4 daughters are in REAL STEEL. They are adorable and really help to set that family movie tone early on in the movie. One of his daughter’s developed a massive crush on Hugh Jackman. (Smart girl if you ask me!)
- When you watch this movie, Shawn wants you to hear the music as well as watch the film. He took special care to pick the songs to match the mood and feeling of the movie. This is especially so for the music that opens the film.
- Shawn also used music to set his tone while filming.
“I play music on set when I’m shooting. And so every movie I make, it’s something I started doing with the
more intellectual the actor, the more I find music is a great way to direct, because you bypass the, like, cerebral intellect, with music. So with Steve Martin, with Ben, with Tina and Steve on ‘Date Night’, um, and with this boy. Especially with Dakota.… music just kind of gives them the feeling you want without it being cluttered with words that get them in their head.
Having Robots in the film, actual built robots added an interesting angle when it came to directing his actors. We asked Shawn what it was like directing the robots.
“Honestly, by the third week, I would go, Dakota, do it this way. Hugh, you’re stepping on this line, blah, blah, blah. And Atom want you, and I knew that Atom was puppeteered, but I directed him like another character.”
I think Shawn did a wonderful job directing this movie. He made some wonderful choices for the film that directors who traditionally only direct action films would have passed by.
It was those choices that helped to add an amazing family element to this film.
REAL STEEL opens in theaters on October 7th. You can follow all the latest news on the film by following @RealSteelMovie on twitter and REAL STEEL on Facebook.
Disney/DreamWorks provided me with an all expenses paid trip to LA for an advance screening of Real Steel. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. I am in no way obligated to provide positive reviews.
Thank you Louise of MomStart.com for taking such awesome pictures.
