Are there foods in your pantry that don’t need to be there?
You know the ones I am talking about… the unhealthy, unnecessary ones that you buy only because you just have to?
If I was to name the #1 item like this in my pantry it would be DIET COKE! I love my diet coke and drink way to much of it. Even after I found out I was pregnant and had to give up caffeine, I still bought the caffeine free kind.
The reality of this is it is unnecessary and not the healthiest choice!
So I am making a Switch with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids.
:
My challenge is to give up something I don’t need, and use the savings of that to help share healthy items with children in need.
While I can’t give up diet coke in exchange for a Jennie-O product, I can make healthier choices for me and my family. We are already huge fans of Jennie-O products and incorporate them once a week at least into our meal plans.
For my Champions for Kids SIMPLE service project I will be heading to the grocery store and adding up the cost of what I normally spend on diet coke for 4 months. (Or a full summer.) I will then convert that savings into a gift card to present to The Shade Tree to spend on Jennie-O products. I will also include several healthy Jennie-O recipes for the people at Shade Tree to use and enjoy. These are all recipes that I have used in my home for my family too!
About Shade Tree:
Our Mission:
“To provide safe shelter to homeless and abused women and children in crisis and to offer life-changing services promoting stability, dignity, and self-reliance.”
My Shopping Trip:
My focus for this Walmart shopping trip was to discover all the different Jennie-O products Walmart carried, buy some for my family to enjoy healthy meals with, price out how much I have been spending on diet coke, and purchase a gift card for The Shade Tree.
I was really surprised by how many different healthy turkey items Jennie-O has! There was really something for every different meat lover in your family. My hubs really enjoys spicy sausages, but they aren’t always the healthiest. Jennie-O has a great option for him to make a healthy switch to!
Who doesn’t love a good weekend breakfast! With Jennie-O you can make healthy choices and have breakfast everyday!
I even found something that I will be sure to pick up next shopping trip! Sun Dried Tomato Roasted Turkey Breast! YUM!! Can’t you just see this on a summer salad?
After filling our cart with some great healthy switches we headed over to the soda aisle where I learned by giving up my case of diet coke for 4 months, I’d be saving myself roughly $30! (You can see the rest of my shopping pictures in my google+ album.)
That will be the amount in which I put on the gift card to give The Shade Tree. Jennie-O products range in price from about $3-$8 per item. This will allow The Shade Tree to purchase quite a few meals for their facility!
After shopping I headed home to print our some of my personal favorite recipes on the Jennie-O website. I hope the women and children at The Shade Tree will enjoy them as much as my family does.
What healthy switch can your family make today? What will you do with savings?

$30 is a great number to donate just from stopping the Diet Coke! Good job!

It seems like quite a few of the bloggers are all giving up soda. Great choice esp. while pregnant.
Congrats on the baby too, how far along are you?

What a nice gesture. Shelters and food banks really need our help. We have a food bank in our town and some relatives who use it say sometimes there is not much on their shelves for a food box (which they pick up once a month) that is healthy to eat.
Gift cards would certainly be a great way to go, unless you could shop and personally drop off some items. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

I love Jennie-O sausages!

I use to think healthy eating was expensive, but I’ve cut my budget in half by buying more fresh produce and less processed foods. I use the Jenny-O sausage link in my stuffed peppers recipe.

We spend so much $ on soda it is crazy. I drink diet coke, husband regular and older kids sprite . I haven’t seen the sundried tomato turkey breast but I agree sounds like it would be good on a salad.

Hi Emily,
You are going above and beyond by giving up soda for four months!!! What a great switch. It’s also a great idea to give Jennie-O Recipe cards with your donation! Many of us (me especially) don’t really think of using turkey because most recipes call for chicken or beef. This will really help out The Shade Tree to know how to use the different turkey products. Thank you so much for your participation.
