Kale Sunrise Smoothie Recipe | 4 Ingredients

July 1, 2012 By Emily 51 Comments

Green smoothies are all the rage right now in the health world.  While they may look intimidating and sometimes downright gross, I can tell you first hand that they are DELICIOUS!

I enjoy at least one green smoothie if not three or four a week!  I love the energy I get in the morning from one, and it is so filling!  My favorite “green” to add to my smoothies is Kale!

Kale is a super food on it’s own. It is packed with antioxidants, high in Vitamin C, Beta Carotene, Vitamin K, and Calcium.  It even has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.  By adding it to a smoothie it is just another way to work kale into your diet.  Make sure you check this post out if you are looking for more ways to eat kale.

This green kale based smoothie is a great way to start your day and give your body tons of natural energy!
Ingredients
  • 2 Cups Kale(*)
  • 1 Cup Coconut Water (guava flavor)
  • 1 Large Orange
  • ¼ Cup Frozen (or Fresh) Strawberries
Instructions
  1. Start by mixing coconut water and kale in blender. Kale should be completely blended.
  2. Add peeled orange - blend.
  3. Add strawberries - blend.
  4. Pour into glass, add ice, and enjoy.
Notes
(*) You may choose to add less kale for your first smoothie. Two cups gives smoothie a green flavor. One cup would allow kale to be masked by the flavor of the orange and strawberries. You can use plain coconut water to cut down on sugars. I prefer the gauva flavor in this particular blend. If Kale will not blend completely, add more coconut water. If your smoothie is too thick, add more coconut water. When you are finished toss the orange peels in sink disposal to help deodorize your sink and sharpen garbage disposal blades.

They are so good. With less Kale or even spinach often times you can’t even taste it in the smoothie!

If you have never had one at all I suggest you start with Spinach. It blends into the taste so much more. I like the green taste so I always add extra, but I have had some you can’t tell at all! 😉

This sounds great. I just did a green smoothie challenge for the month of June and am now hooked. I actually hadn’t thought of adding oranges to the smoothie so thanks for the suggestion!

I tried this just this morning and it was not at all smooth. It was mostly the orange that made it so chunky, but I actually had to chew at some points. Ay suggestions on how to make it smoother?

Try removing your stalks from the Kale. You could also substitute real OJ for the Orange. I’ve never had to chew mine. Maybe blend the orange first? Sorry!!

Thanks I will try that! I think using oj will help, though I’ll be sorry to lose the fiber from the orange. But the flavor was really good. What kind of blender do you have? Maybe that would make a difference too.
