Meet the Mayor of Kidville in Las Vegas

July 29, 2012 By Emily 19 Comments

If you walk into Kidville in Las Vegas, you will be greeted by a bright store-front boutique filled with the latest in fashions and educational toys for children.  By the time you make your way to the desk you are sure to find several smiling faces, one of which is most likely the “Mayor” of Kidville Melissa Weiner!

Yes, I said Mayor.  While some may think of her as management, Melissa always introduces herself as the Mayor, and does so with a big smile on her face.  As the Mayor, Melissa’s job is multifaceted, but first and foremost she is there to ensure your child has the best possible experience while visiting.

This past week, I took sometime to put together an interview to let you know more about Melissa, being the Mayor, and of course Kidville!

You are the Mayor of Kidville, what does that mean?  Can you tell me a little bit about your background with Kidville.

Good question! As the Mayor, I  handle all things Kidville.  I am privileged to teach and play and put smiles on hundreds of kids all day! I also manage all the programming, scheduling, buying, hiring, and marketing. Externally, I am the face of Kidville. I am the point person for members and their children. I certainly wear a lot of hats, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I always knew I wanted to work with children. After graduating college I worked in the publishing world in New York for several years. Although it was very fun and memorable, I didn’t find it very fulfilling. At that time I decided to return to school to study teaching. I feel in love with that field.  While I was attending Hunter College Graduate School, I worked part time as an assistant teacher at Kidville in NYC.  Shortly after completion of my Master’s program I became a lead teacher.. I quickly moved up the ranks and when given the opportunity to move West to Las Vegas and open the Tivoli Village location, it was just an offer too special to pass up.

For those who have never been into a Kidville before, how would you describe it to them?

We like to call Kidville a “one stop shop for families with young children.”  Our focus here is on early childhood development and we do all that we can to create a safe, welcoming, FUN and enriching environment for both children and parents. We offer a vast variety of classes for children newborn to six years with core focuses on music, art, dance and gym. Our classes operate on a 16-week semester system, offering the children more consistency and the opportunity to really dive into their interest area. Additionally, we throw worry-free birthday parties, have a kiddy salon and have a unique boutique on our first level.

When parents and children walk through the doors of Kidville what do you hope their takeaway is?

I really hope that parents and children alike feel like they are part of the Kidville family. We want our members to know that we truly care about each child and we get excited to see them grow, smile and hit their milestones.  We also hope they’d observe that we put safety, cleanliness and each child’s well being at the forefront of everything that we do.

Kidville offers many different classes, but membership and class prices are a bit higher than other options in Las Vegas.  What are families going to find at Kidville that they can’t get anywhere else?

Kidville is a premium product and what we offer to our members is all about safety, fun, cleanliness and value – nothing like anything in Vegas. With that price comes well thought out lesson plans, crafted by individuals with advanced early childhood development degrees.  You won’t find children making simple crafts at Kidville, instead you’ll find them constructing unique projects that have a lesson incorporated with them. For example, for Earth Day we had the children make vases from used water bottles –focusing principles of recycling and growing plants in addition to the crafting project.

Our class offerings are also very diverse. Our signature class Rockin’ Railroad is like nothing else in Las Vegas right now. Each class features a live, four-person band, comprised of professional musicians and original music.  We also have a program here called KVU, which is our pre-school alternative program.  This class meets twice a week for 2 hours with the option for a third day and focuses on gradual separation, socialization, and helps to transition kids into a pre-school environment.  In addition, we have dance classes, science, sports, gymnastics, yoga, art and many more!!

Finally, we love our Kidville kids. This is not a place where kids just pop in and out; we’re a family. We pay attention to detail, remember each child’s name and celebrate their accomplishments.

Every day we come to class, you have a smile on your face. What do you love most about your job?

The kids of course! I feel so fortunate to work with so many adorable kids and loving families each day. When a child races up to me yelling “Miss Melissa,” with arms open wide and waiting for a hug, I can’t help but smile.  Each day is different and the kids always keep me on my toes……but I love it!

With camp coming to a close, what can parents and children look forward to in the Fall?

We have our 2nd Annual Kids Fest event coming up on August 25th.  We hold a big event before school starts to help out a local charity.  This year we have Mercedes Martinez from 94.1 hosting and we are partnering with the Goodie Two Shoes organization.  They help bring shoes to over 10,000 children in the Las Vegas area every year!  The event will be held at Kidville in Tivoli Village and begins at 11am.  We ask for a $10 cash donation per family or you can bring a brand new pair of closed toe sneakers to donate.  Rsvp at rsvptivoli@kidville.com

If you haven’t visited Kidville at Tivoli Village yet, I’d say it was about time!

While you are there make sure to wave to Mayor Melissa, and she will make you and your child feel like royalty!

You can find Kidville on Facebook and Twitter!
