Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904 While he was a poet, writer, and cartoonist h e was most widely known for his children’s books written and illustrated as Dr. Seuss.
For countless generations of children Dr. Seuss has given children a love of words, enchanting them with his fun characters, silly rhymes, and amazing way with making words work for him. In his career he wrote 46 children’s books. So many of which are favorites of mine that I have enjoyed sharing with my son. We love Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in The Hat, Hop on Pop, Horton Hears a Who!, and Fox in Socks.
Last year I started what I hope will be an 18 year tradition of bringing Oh, The Places You’ll Go! to K’s teachers to sign at the end of the year.
I can’t wait to give that to him when he graduates high school!
One of my son’s absolute favorite story books by Dr. Seuss is The Lorax.
While his love of the story started with the release of The Lorax movie, it is a book we read at least 2-3 times a month. It has taught him to love the earth and to speak up for what he cares for. Shortly after my son turned 3 he saw his first field of dandelions that had turned white and were ready to blow. He decided those were Truffula Trees. He was so excited. “Look Mommy, Truffula Trees! Just like in the Lorax!” Reading teaches our children to dream, and perhaps no one did that better than Dr. Seuss and his stories continue to have messages that are relevant to today’s society despite the fact that they were written many years ago.
It is because of that each year I make a big deal about celebrating Dr. Seuss’s Birthday with my son, (now sons).
Here are 3 fun Dr. Seuss birthday activities you can do with your kids!
1. Make Green Eggs and Ham.
What a better way to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday than to make a breakfast of Green Eggs & Ham. I try not to use dyes in my cooking at all. However I couldn’t find another way to dye the ham green, so I used a very small amount of natural dye. To make the eggs, I like to use frozen Kale, but you can substitute any fresh or frozen dark leafy green. We are a mostly dairy free family, so I used almond milk in the egg mixture, but you can substitute with your milk of choice.
Serve on a fun plate. I like to use the Green Eggs and Ham book as a centerpiece on the table!
- 2 Eggs
- Small Handful Kale (can substitute spinach)
- Splash Almond Milk (can substitute any milk)
- add cheese if desired
- Spiral Sliced Ham
- 2 drops green food coloring
- For Eggs:
- Using a blender or hand mixer blend eggs, kale (or spinach), and almond milk until mixture turns a light green color.
- Pour mixture into greased frying pan and gently mix eggs until scrambled.
- Remove eggs from heat.
- For Ham:
- Mix ¼ cup water with 2 drops green coloring.
- Pour water mixture into frying pan.
- Place ham slices and cook until warm.
2. Make Dr. Seuss Inspired Crafts – The Lorax Orange
This Lorax snack and craft is the perfect activity to enjoy with your little ones, as it allows you to make your own edible Lorax. Say goodbye to snacks that are unhealthy, or crafts that are complicated, this is one Seuss craft that is simple and good for them. Take a peek below at how to craft your own so you can get it on the fun too!
Supplies needed:
- Small oranges
- Googly eyes
- Yellow craft paper
- Scissors
- Glue
Directions:
- Begin by gluing the eyes of your Lorax to the front of the orange. A dab of glue on each eye is all it should take. Press until they are adhered well.
- Snip the mustache and eyebrows out of your yellow paper. It is easiest to cut out a kidney bean or jelly bean shape. Then, use your scissors to fringe the edges so they look like hair.
- Glue the eyebrows and mustache to the face of the Lorax. Press until dry.
Would you believe that’s all it takes to make your own Lorax snack? Once your Lorax is dry, why not curl up with the copy of the book for a read aloud? Enjoy the story and the wonderful message it shares, then enjoy your Lorax snacks together. This is a fun and frugal way to enjoy the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss and dive into the story a little further.
Speaking of reading…
3. Take a Seuss inspired adventure to the bookstore or library!
Our house is full of books. If there is one thing I never ever feel badly buying for my children it’s another book. Each week we go to the library and pick out 7-10 new books to read, but even then we still end up digging into our personal supply of books around here. So when Dr. Seuss’s birthday rolls around I love to take my son to the bookstore to purchase a new Dr. Seuss book! I figure there are 46 of them, so this tradition could easily last through all our kids for a long time. It’s a fun little adventure and it further develops his love of reading. So after our Green Eggs and Ham breakfast we venture to the bookstore and pick out our new book. We easily spend all morning at the book store. If we are lucky we even get to do a story time! I know that the book he ends up picking will be one he will love for a lifetime.
Inside the book I write his name and the year we bought it. I plan on packing these books up and giving them to my son(s) to share with their little ones. This will be Baby D’s first year picking out a Dr. Seuss book of his own, and K’s 3rd year.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money either, often times they have paperback versions of the stories that are more affordable. Amazon has many of the hardcover books for under $10 and most under $6. Or if you just can’t spend money on a new book right now venture out to your local library and rent a whole bunch of Dr. Seuss books and make it a Seuss themed week!
Don’t worry if you have nothing planned for tomorrow! Dr. Seuss’s birthday is March 2nd, but you can easily make this a whole week of crafts and Dr. Seuss birthday activities for your family!
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Thank you for inspiring a life long love of reading in so many, for making children everywhere laugh, dream big, and use their imaginations!
How will you celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday?
FYI I included several Amazon affiliate links to Dr. Seuss books. I get a % of every purchase bought when you click my links. It isn’t much, but I always use it to buy more books for my kids – every little bit helps!

We love Dr. Seuss! We read Oh the Places You’ll Go at least once a week. It’s also become my favorite high school graduation gift to give.
That’s a great one – I’m having all my son’s teachers sign it so I can give it to him when he graduates. 🙂
The Lorax is one of our favorite books! I’ll definitely be making this snack today!
