My son is at the age where he is learning what scary means and he is really not sure what he thinks of monsters. Recently he has been telling me there is a monster and that monster is scary.
While I can tell him that monsters aren’t real, or they aren’t scary, it is easier for him to understand that when he can connect with something more visual.
About Marlow and The Monster
In Marlow and The Monster, written by Sharon Cramer, Marlow has a monster he doesn’t know what to do with. The monster is not particularly scary, although it thinks it is! Marlow is frustrated and desperate for a solution from his uninvited guest, so he finally resorts to giving the monster to his little sister Sarah. Is it Sarah who figures out what to do with the monster?
Marlow and The Monster is Cramer’s fourth children’s book, following the three book series Cougar Cub Tales, an award winning children’s book series about the adventures of a brother and sister cougar cub. Cramer is also a nurse and mom of three!
My Review
My son was instantly connected to this book when he saw it. “Mom, is this monster scary?” “Mom, Marlow doesn’t like this monster!” “So monsters can be nice too?” I loved seeing his expressions change as we learned more about the Monster through Cramer’s words. He was visibly not sure if he liked the monster at first. He was concerned about the monster, he worried about Marlow. Then as we learned more about the Monster and that he may actually be a nice monster, Squishy relaxed and really seemed to understand that this wasn’t something to be afraid of!
I loved the artwork and contrast of black and white and color. (An interesting note, Cramer purposely only put the monster in color because only children can see the monster.) It was visually stimulating and held my son’s attention the whole time. Even now after reading it a few times, my son is still finding new things to look at and ask about.
If you have a child who is concerned about monsters or worries that they are scary, I highly recommend Marlow and The Monster to ease your child’s concerns!

My daughter has been noticing things more and looking for assurance as to whether or not it’s scary.. like the dark, a strange noise, the vacuum… and an alien she saw on TV. I think she’d like this one!
