My son is just over a year and not old enough to really help out too much with the big kid crafts so I put together a sensory activity for him and a friend. The boys loved it so much and the older girls couldn’t help but join in on the fun! Sensory Spaghetti (aka Halloween Worms) was a total hit, even the dogs got in on it!
Not only is it a big hit for different ages, it is super easy to do and totally safe if little ones (or dogs) eat a little of it!
How to Make Sensory Spaghetti – AKA Halloween Worms!
Here’s what you need:
- As much spaghetti as you would like to use. I did a whole 1 lb box and there was plenty for all the kids to play with
- Stove, pot, water, colander – the stuff you need to make the spaghetti
- Food coloring- I chose red, blue, green and I made a purply black color by mixing the red and blue together
- Containers to separate the colored pasta in
- Vegetable oil for appropriate sliminess
- Any items you want to mix in for more sensory fun such as plastic/rubber bugs and spiders. Just remember to keep them large enough so it’s not a choking hazard!
I promise this is super easy and fast! Boil, cook and drain your pasta to desired “doneness”. Slightly al dente is good so that it won’t fall apart while being played with. You can let it sit in the colander or your separate containers to cool or go ahead and rinse it with cold water if you are in more of a hurry.
Divide up the pasta into as many containers as you have colors chosen.
Pour a drizzle of vegetable oil on. Just enough to coat the pasta enough so that it is slick.
Put the food dye on. The more drops you use, the more concentrated the color will be! I wanted it to be pretty dark so I put on somewhere between 10-15 drops of each color!
Add whatever elements you want to use like the rubber bugs
Set out for the kiddos and watch them play away!
It is good, messy fun so we did outside and a total plus was that I did not notice any of the food dye coming off of the pasta onto the kids hands/clothes/faces!
It is messy but I did not see any staining which is a big plus in my book!
Happy Halloween!

Looks like a fun afternoon and he had lots of friends to help him enjoy those worms. I was going to ask if the food coloring leaked because that is my biggest issue. Glad to see it didn’t. I’d love to see how mine would react with the squishiness. Another sensory thing we’ve done is make the sensory bottles. Have you tried those?
