Toddler Trail Mix | BLUE DIAMOND ALMONDS

May 18, 2012 By Emily 56 Comments

As a parent of a super active almost 3 year old I am constantly on the look out for healthy snacks that not only taste great, but give my son the fuel he needs to be as active as he is.

One of the things I have learned in my 3 years of being a parent is that if I am eating something it instantly becomes attractive to my son.  BLUE DIAMOND ALMONDS are no exception!

I used to pack a serving size in my purse at all times.  Now I pack two serving sizes.  Otherwise my son eats them all and I am left hungry and craving my favorite on the go snack!

My whole family are almond addicts.  My hubs loves the Bold Wasabi & Soy Sauce Almonds.  I send them to him whenever he deploys, and he is always asking for more.

"Heart Healthy Snacks"

For my son and I we tend to stick to more simple but just as tasty flavors like the American Heart Association recommended Sea Salt.  These almonds are oven roasted with no added oil.  They make the perfect on the go snack.  Now thanks to the new container, I don’t even have to put them in serving sizes.  I actually just through that little container in my purse.

Blue Diamond Almond Flavors Become American Heart Association Certified
Variety of Flavors Meet Criteria for Heart-Healthy Food

Blue Diamond Growers is proud to announce that a variety of Blue Diamond Almonds have been certified by the American Heart Association (AHA) as a heart-healthy food. Not only are Blue Diamond Almonds a delicious snack, but they are good for your heart and good for your health! The following flavors now feature the AHA Heart-Check mark:

  • Whole Natural
  • Roasted Salted
  • Low Sodium
  • Sea Salt
  • No Salt
  • Honey Dijon

The American Heart Association works to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.  Heart disease is American’s number one killer and is completely preventable by following a number of health measures, one of which is eating healthy. When a consumer spots the AHA Heart-Check mark on food packaging, they can rest assured that the food meets the strict guidelines for a heart-healthy food.

Recently I have been letting my son join me in the kitchen for a few projects.  In addition to showing him healthy options for food, I want him to learn how to feel comfortable in the kitchen and how to make a healthy snack.  This has the exact same result as me eating something, if he makes it, he is excited to eat it.  Last week we made simple fun toddler trail mix together using BLUE DIAMOND ALMONDS.  While the BLUE DIAMOND ALMONDS are heart healthy AHA approved snack on their own, sometimes it is fun to mix it up a little bit!

I brought out a big bowl, all the ingredients, and let my son pour them into the bowl.  We then mixed it up, bagged it, and now we have a fun toddler trail mix featuring heart healthy almonds!  He loves it!

I wish I’d thought of your clever trail mix idea when my kids were small. They wouldn’t touch nuts, even peanuts. They’re in high school now, so their palates have changed, luckily. Just today my eldest asked if he could take some of “my” hummus and almonds for his lunch! Such a proud moment. Maybe he’ll eat healthfully in college after all!

First of all I would like to say fantastic blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I have had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips? Many thanks!

I eat this brand almonds but I don’t feel comfy feeding them to the 3 year old yet. Maybe when she’s about 5 I’ll feel better about her chewing them thoroughly.

My kids love trail mix/ gorp as we call it. I also LOVE that I can include them in making it. It is not a mess and they love to think of ingredients to add. Nice that Blue Diamond has so many new flavors to make different versions of gorp with. Thanks for the GREAT idea. xo

I like to mix nuts in with cereals for a trail mix. They can help lower cholesterol when eaten in moderation.
