Backyard Bug Exploring

June 24, 2013 By Alex K 27 Comments

Product was provided to facilitate this review. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

My little guy (whom I call my Bug) is absolutely OB-sessed with bugs!  So, when we got the Backyard Safari Outfitters Essential Field Gear to try, I knew it would be a hit.  Upon presenting my budding entomologist with the first few items from the kit (you have to dole the good stuff out slowly after all), he immediately put on his new vest and filled it with the pop-up field guides and grabbed his compass.  He had a blank Backyard Safari Cargo Vest in need of accomplishment patches, and a world to explore.  He was ready to go!

For our first Backyard Safari outing, we took the Lazer Light Bug Vacuum and Backyard Safari Walkie Talkies up to the mountain to go bug hunting.  MY Bug was instantly transformed into a professional adventurer as soon as he loaded the extra capture core and bug guide into his vest.  Clipping his walkie-talkie to his belt, he proclaimed, “Let’s go!” through an ear-to ear grin.  It’s always a joy to see your little one this excited, but it is particularly satisfying when science and nature are the focus of his fun.

The best part of the Bug Vacuum is the removable capture core with its built in magnifying glass.  It made it so easy to observe and identify the bugs we found.

Then, with a quick twist of the top, the bug could be released without any harm.  Plus, the vacuum keeps him from picking up the bugs with his hands.  Safer for the forests bugs, and mine.

Once we got home we put the on the skill patches he had earned that day, which are included with each kit, on his vest which he know struts around, with pride, between adventures.

We are looking forward to our next expedition out into nature.  It is a wonderful way to explore to outdoors, spend true quality time as a family, and even learn a few things along the way!

Kids are either scared of bugs or intrigued by them… my son was intrigued. 🙂 He’s at the age now that he is just indifferent.

Looks like great kit. Living on a farm, we have lots of bugs however our pet chickens eat them up. Bugs are so interesting and fun to watch the chickens go crazy over them.
