I love taking pictures of my kids, especially when it comes to milestones. I started taking back to school pictures with a sign when my oldest started Preschool and I loved it so much I haven’t stopped.
You might remember my printable back to school Kindergarten sign from last year. I loved it. It was seriously the sweetest way to start his first real school year off, and it’s something I will always have. When the last day of Kinder rolled around I found this adorable chalkboard at Michaels and an idea was born.
You see, I’m not crafty. I don’t have nice handwriting, and I don’t want to buy a new sign every year, but I love comparison pictures and I’m big on tradition. I figured for less than $15 with one chalkboard sign (really any sign will do, but I love the combination of chalkboard and school…), I could accomplish everything with very little effort on my part.
This is seriously the easiest and most simple back to school sign. You can re-use it every year and you can use it with multiple children!
Supplies Needed:
- A Chalkboard Sign (I got mine at Michaels, but this one on Amazon is very similar.)
- PicMonkey.com or any simple editor that allows you to add text to your picture.
- Chalkboard Markers – if you prefer to write it yourself.
Have your child pose holding a blank sign.
I recommend taking school pictures in the same spot so you can compare how much they have grown from the start of the year!
You can now edit your picture and add the text you want on the sign. I usually use picmonkey.com because it’s free, although if you go premium they also have some fun chalkboard fonts. If you prefer to write on your sign, I recommend chalkboard markers because they stand out better than regular chalk does.
And that is it! I told you this was the most simple back to school sign that you’d be able to re-use year after year!
Do you have any back to school traditions? I’d love to hear them – let me know in the comments below!

Great post! In this digital age, it is SO easy to clump away the photos and lose track of where they are and when they were taken.
With this fail-safe method, we at least take care of the date thing! 🙂
…and I also love comparing pictures, times, etc.
Using a software program to update the sign is so smart! I see so many cute signs and this is definitely a great idea to do it right, year after year.
I seriously love this idea! Using a reusable sign is brilliant. So much easier than trying to print out a sign for each kid. I have 3 kids going to school this year. I like the idea of using this sign and then just throwing the photos into picmonkey to add the text!
That is smart to make a reusable one! I am going to have to try this.
That is a cute sign and a cute idea. Like being able to document their growth over the years
I think it is such a great idea! I want to make one for my kids too for their first day!
I absolutely LOVE this idea!! I also love that you added different fonts to make it really unique.
I love this idea. I wish I had taken these type of photos with my kids.
What a cool idea! I’d love taking a similar photo each year to add to the scrapbook!
Love the idea of using the same one year after year! What a fun idea to document the first day of school.
I love this idea! I really love that it is reusable!
This is such a great idea. I wish i had of done this with my kids when they were younger. You could do a wall with all the photos on it.
I have to try this with my kids. I will be missing the first few years but that is ok. I will have to share this with my friends with little ones.
So cute. What a great idea! I want to try that!
What a great idea to make a reusable back to school sign, I wish I had done this with my kids.
That is so creative and clever. I would love to start taking these pictures each year.
Yes, this is the absolute sweetest thing ever. I have 4 kids and all are grown. These pictures would be fun to use at open houses when they graduate.
What a great idea. I use to use the poster board idea but like the chalk board a lot better. Thanks for this!
