I often wish I could tap into my toddler and borrow some of his energy. In fact, the day “they” learn to harness that energy and sell it to the masses is the day someone will get very rich! I don’t know a parent out there who hasn’t thought to themselves at some point or another, “Where on earth does my child get all this energy!”
When you are going to ask a toddler to participate in projects like art and science, running their energy out a little bit has got to be top priority. When we first started Camp Kidville I thought to myself that the counselors were a bit crazy to start with gym time. How in the world did they think they were going to get my son to leave all this fun stuff? But sure enough, gym time first is exactly what works, and doing it first thing actually leads to more productive and focused toddlers! (Well, as focused as any toddler can really be.)
Gym time allows them to run out their energy, shake off the silly, and just plain adjust to being at camp. Each day a few new obstacles are set out along with the familiar favorites. (like balls, Squishy will always ask where the basketballs are if they aren’t out.) For about 20 minutes the children are free to do as they please in the gym. They can participate in the new obstacles if they choose, or they can just run around and enjoy the freedom.
(As you can see parents are encouraged to be as hands on as they would like, clearly sitting in the foam pit is a good thing, except when toddlers come bounding at you!)
The last 5-10 minutes the counselors bring the students together for parachute time. While this may seem like just another fun activity, it is actually the beginning of asking the students to listen and participate with the group. The program at Camp Kidville is incredibly well thought out and perfect for toddlers and their boundless energy. Gym Time is not only fun time, but important to get them started on the right foot for a happy 2 hours of camp!

My toddler loves his time at our local gym! It’s so important for us because he gets social interaction and exercise at the same time. Not to mention building his motor skills. Kidville looks awesome!
