Doing What It Takes To Lose Weight After Baby | {Maternity Leave Guest Post}

December 21, 2012 By Emily 14 Comments

Hey there Our Knight Life readers!

My name is Tara and I blog over at Mommy Head Adventures.  You can read the adventures that I go through with my 3 year old, Bear, who has a speech delay, my 2 year old, Lion, who has Down syndrome, and my new baby, Banana, who is just cute.

I talk about everything from special needs to product reviews to weight loss.  It is my place to share a glimpse in my life, and would love to see you come along for the ride.

I am so happy to be here to share with you today, and honored to be helping Emily out as she welcomes her newest bundle of joy!

*****

In the weeks leading up to the arrival of my third child, I was miserable.  I had missed being gestational diabetic by a small margin and my doctor shared with me that he was concerned I was glucose intolerant, or pre-diabetic.  When I went into the hospital, I was weighing in at 235 lbs.  That was a whopping weight gain of 65+ pounds in the pregnancy.

I knew when 6 weeks postpartum came, I had a job to do.  I had to get the weight off and I didn’t have time to waste.  I wanted to be here for my kids which meant I had to make a change.

Before I was even cleared by my doctor to start exercising, I went into a local gym and signed up for a membership.  I made my appointment to be weighed and measured for the day after my 6 week appointment.  When a deal on personal training came up, I took it.

BEFORE:

And I never looked back.

Daddy Head and I knew that we were making a significant monetary investment, but it was worth it.  I have heard it said that what you spend your money on is what you truly care about.  And we cared about getting me healthy.

It was hard at first.

My muscles were sore from lifting weights.

I could barely walk for 2 miles on the treadmill at a 4 mph pace.

Planks were my worst enemy!

Don’t even get me started on burpees.

But over time, things got easier.  I was adding more weight to my lifting.  I started running and did my first 5k in over 5 years and ran the whole thing.

When I ran a 2 mile race at a 17:52, I cried.  I still don’t care for burpees, but they are not that bad.  And I am looking forward to running my first half-marathon in February.

The key to my success was that I was willing to do what it takes.  When things got hard, I reminded myself how important my children were.  And that made things more tolerable.

So, whatever your walk is right now in life, set some goals and do what it takes to obtain them.

If you need some encouragement, I know Emily has some great fitness posts here and I would love for you to stop by my weekly Weigh In On Wednesdays.

Thanks Tara for guest posting while I am snuggling my new baby!! You look AMAZING! Your hard work and effort have really paid off!! I look forward to joining in your weigh in Wednesdays in 6 weeks!!

You look great! I’m pre-diabetic and had GD with both pregnancies. I must get this weight off after my 6 week postpartum check too.
